Re: Photography
try out at home with all light on at living room & kitchen.

shot taken with D5200 & 35mm f/1.8G under Aperture mode with f/8.0, Auto ISO not above 800 & shutter not below 1/10s. All photo taken under RAW file and direct convert without any adjustment.

I prefer without external flash. may i have your view and comment... :)

1/15s & Auto (ISO 720)

1/60s & Auto (ISO 800) with external flash

1/15s & Auto (ISO 560)

1/60s & Auto (ISO 400) with external flash

Re: Photography
Hi Wade

Any reason to use 1/15 sec? If you were shooting people, minimumly use 1/60 cos even if you dont cause camera shake, the people will move.

Use bounce flash whenever possible.

I hope you are not the main photographer for the wedding, you will need more practice first.

just try out and not sure which shutter speed is suitable?

I using the flash with the cover siting next to the flash; or should I use the internal tool instead of cover as show at pic?

I find those flash diffuser cover quite useless as it is too small to soften the light.

If I use flash, I would bounce it and sometimes pull out the white card (pull out from the flash) to "throw" some light forward.

Maybe this youtube video will help you understand better.

At home, no need to use ISO 800, go re-shoot at ISO 200 with bounce flash.

f/8.0, 1/80s & ISO200 with bounce flash. I notice that the light have been soften.

Re: Photography
ya, not as bright, can dial in some more power on the flash unit or lower shutter speed to 1/50 - 1/60 secs. Btw, your flash is the 900 or 700 series?

I using TTL now or should i use M whereby I can select the 1/64, 1/32 or other. Flash is Speedlight SP-780.

btw, what does 1/1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, 1/64 & 1/128 mean? it is refer to the power of the shot out light?

Re: Photography
ya, those numbers are for manually choosing the flash power....usually TTL does the job but if it doesnt, power it up a bit.

Try to review your shot on the cam immediately after you take the photo, don't go home already then discover mistakes made, too late liao.

i just try a few shot at 1/50s, f/8 & 1/1, 1/2 and 1/4. I notice that the more power on the flash make the photo darker. hope my understand is correct less number meaning more power of light been use.

btw if outdoor, does ISO100, 1/50s to 1/80 with not flash should be ok right?
Re: Photography
yes, 1/1 is full power, 1/128 is much lesser power....

google for the relationships (or triangle) between ISO, shutter speed and aperture, these settings affect the exposure of the shot.

Adding flash is adding another element that u need to learn to control, flash photography is not that straight forward.

I can understand why pro photographers use flash when taking events photos. But I'm not and don't use flash for events, as I'm not paid for it and I think i can afford to be more creative using just ambient light.
Re: Photography
shot taken at f/8, 1/50 & ISO200 with M setting on flash. I find that 1/4 should be ok and the more number up on the flash make the photo darker.

1/2

1/4

Re: Photography
ya, 1/4 looks right. Btw, didnt know Nikon has the SB780 liao, they are coming up with new flash models so fast!

Btw, if your D5200's built in flash can act as a commander, you can play with off cam flash, it's fun.

lol i not pro and there is a pro main photographer for my bro-in-law wedding. I just only take for my practice and keeping purpose.

btw, how abt outdoor setting? ISO100, 1/50s to 1/80 with not flash should be ok right?

hehe, the flash is not from Nikon. a brand name as Q-mini Speedlight SP-780 suitable for Nikon... :( not $$$ buy nikon flash, so get a OEM to fit the job.

actually very difficult to answer your question, it depends on the light at your location at that time. Like I say, look at your cam's LCD to check exposure.

SInce you are not the main photog, my view is don't use flash, just up your ISO to attain sufficient shutter speed. Another thing, learn to manually set the white balance especially when you are indoor and not using flash.

@christcentro, I notice that there is many selection and hope my understand is correct

incandescent = indoor

fluorescent = indoor

direct sunlight = outdoor

flash = it is ok to use with bounce flash

cloudy = outdoor

shade = outdoor

Yup, that should be it. Personally, I've never used any of these presets.

Most of the time in Auto WB but I will manually set the WB in incandescent lighting as auto mode would probably render the image too orangey.
Re: Photography
just read the review on your D5200. These are 2 of the PROs

* Excellent low ISO performance in both JPEG and Raw files

* Class-leading noise performance at high ISO sensitivities

This makes me want to reiterate, no flash photography :D

Use your 35mm f1.8 lens and go around shooting it at f1.8 and enjoy the shallow depth of field (that's why we buy DSLR, to me at least)
Re: Photography
ok will get change and go out shot at f/1.8 & f/8.0 with ISO100 & 1/50 to 1/80.

Re: Photography
Outdoor is diff setting, arrrh...

Now using 1/400, f/8.0 & ISO100. If i select 1/60, it too bright.

Btw, what shutter speed is suitable for outdoor?

Shutter speed depends on your subject and the effects that you want to show. Bro, just hoot lah and see for yourself. Hoot first talk later also applies to photography.

Ya, true enough. Have to shot and see then will know what shutter speed is suitable.

Just finish at Chinatown, now heading to Tampines to collect Hakkaido Rockmelon.

Like TheChef said, depends. But generally, higher shutter speed is "better" as it reduces camera shake from hand held shooting. Should be at least 1/Focal Length. If you shooting with a 50mm, 1/60 would be the slowest. In bright sunlight, 1/400 sounds correct. No disadvantage compared to 1/60 so I think can go ahead and use those settings.

If the picture is too bright, you can compensate with the other 2 key settings, ISO and aperture. ISO should be as low as possible to reduce noise, although DSLRs are usually Ok with up to 800. Outdoors ISO should be 100 to 200.

If you're using a 1.8, then keep the aperture around 2.0 to take advantage of the wide aperture. The bokeh and shallow DOP would be good for portraits especially.

Worst case scenario, use exposure compensation. I'll usually go -0.3 or -0.7 in bright sunlight.

Yup. The basic trinity of shutter speed / aperture / ISO will keep you busy for a long time.

Confirmed. I brought up those three as they are the main ones to control the amount of light entering the lens. I've always felt they need to be considered together in and form the basics of SLR photography.

ya, actually, I wonder why you start with manual mode, use aperture mode first, let the camera decide the shutter speed, if too low, just up your ISO manually to get higher shutter speed. See my prawn noodle, the prawn eye is on 1/3 of the frame.
