i dunno much about swiss pieces, let alone omega speedy, but i keep seeing a sellers posting FS for omega speedy pro for 2.6k++ :o

can it be so cheap? i always thought they are much more :?:

at the same price as what i paid for my mm300, i am tempted to aim for one in 2012

can any bro advice?

roo7: Amended thread title :ugeek:
Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
They are around this price. The basic Speedmaster Professional is a current model, with a current movement (1861), and enjoyed a relatively long production run, so there should be a good pool of used pieces for sale at these prices.

I like these:

omega speedy pro on sgroc
This is the standard price for used omega speedy...even at pre own shop also around this price :D

Quoted frm Net;

The cal.321 movement was produced since 1946 and used in the Speedmaster Pro till october 1968. After that, they started using the cal.861 movement, which had lesser parts and thus cheaper to produce for Omega. Omega used it till 1997. Nowadays, they use the cal.1861, which has a nicer finish and an extra jewel (18).

42mm watch... ;)
Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
bro fyi there are many types of speedy, movt used ,variant, model = price

pre moon speedmaster professional cal 321

moonwatch speedmaster professional 861

moonwatch speedmaster professional 1861 (post moon...made for decades ,so still can find mint and new set)

various speedmaster series( mark II,III,4.5 ,125 etc)

later released from 90's to present;

lotsa racing /F1 related speedmaster variants

speedmaster reduced

and much more...

if you interested to buy one according to value ,have to do research cos local and overseas forum pricing a bit different. But there is a gauge pricing.. according to movt, variant, model, condition

dont have to worry abt size cos its pretty around the same 41-42mm dimension and it wouldnt wear small on your wrist...look at how popular they are with many collectors..celebrities etc..

only version you have to note are those special variant made for some games/ppl(olympic? f1?)cos variant too many hence have to check their sizes and also the speedy reduced(reduced using other movt riao)

861 and 1861 are robust manual wind movt with e latter have extra jewels and better plate finished(1861 n 1863(mainly) does have a lot of display casebacks variants)

Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
You cant mixed up the cal 3220 speedy reduced(3510.50) with cal 1861(or even 861) speedy cos from the size (when u hands on it ) and also dial ,secs hand differences.

cos if ppl ask me reduced or 1861 or 861 better(maybe they wanna pul trigger on one?)

I will ask him what matters to him first.

-vintage or modern?

-heritage/iconic?

-movement?

-price?

-size?

Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
cal 3220 info;

It is powered by an exclusive decorated, rugged and reliable movement - the Omega 3220 caliber - which is different than the previous versions of this model, since they used to have the 1140 movement that lacks the desirable luxury finish. It has rhodium-plated finish, beautifully decorated with perlage (circular graining) on the plates, and Côtes de Genève (Geneva stripes) on the winding rotor mass and bridges. This movement, exclusive to Omega, is a slim 45-jewel self-winding Chronograph with central hour hand, central minute hand, small seconds at 3 o'clock, 12-hour totalizer at 6 o'clock, 30-minute totalizer at 9 o'clock, and central chronograph hand. The movement is of modular construction, based on the ETA 2892-A2 with the exclusive Dubois-Dépraz 2020 module. Power reserve: 40hours. This movement's dimensions are 30mm diameter by a height of 6.5mm. The high 28,800 beat-per-hour frequency (4Hz) make the small seconds hand at 3 o'clock as well as the central chronograph hand glide smoothly--noticeably smoother than on its big brother the Omega Speedmaster Professional which has a slower frequency of 21,600 beats-per-hour (3 Hz).

Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
+1 for bro osimm.. You gotta know what you want from an omega speedy pro.. I for one wouldn't touch the 3xxx caliber, I like my watches as closely resemble the original (though the one that went to the moon is the cal.321 only, debatable of course).

Some "limited editions" of the speedy is worth collecting (eg.the snoopy) some aren't (40th anniversary Apollo landing, because they're just gonna release 45th anniversary and 50th and so forth). But again, these limited editions are personal preference.. To each their own :D

IMHO, you can't go wrong with the cal.1861 (current production), though just FYI: there is a part of cal.1861 is made up of plastic, just one part though.. If it bothers you, you might want to consider cal.861 (vintage and it's in rose gold) or cal. 1863.

Just to clarify, is there any "Speedmaster Professional" with a 3xxx calibre? Not trying to be anal here, just wish to sharpen the conversation, especially in the usage of model designations.

For example, this is NOT a "Speedmaster Professional", and it is COSC certified:

Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
oh since herz bro brought it up and to clear the confusion... speedmaster 'professional' is kinda like a marketing effort by Omega when they knw that NASA astronauts tested and wore their speedmasters to the moon hence a 'professional' word on dial will sound more 'pro' and deemed 'tested and proven' watch.

Mainly the iconic 'moonwatch' 861 n 1861 series will have professional on dial and also few of the mark series.

then again not much differences .. other than movt calibres and so on.

so when ppl talk about speedy pro....think about 861 and 1861 moonwatch can riao... they are truely professional.....

'looking'.. least moonwatch is NASA's iconic n hot favourite watch.

if u got money...u can think about a pre-speedy pro 321 also.. :)
Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
taken from WUS thread;

1. Speedmaster is a line of Omega chronographs that loosely look like the professional models (I think even the Schumacher versions have similar traits, even though they're probably the farthest from the pro in looks - although the new 5-counter chronograph looks quite different as well).

2. Professional was used after Omega discovered that NASA was using it, so I'm guessing that Professional means its use is for professional astronauts.

3. Professional is used on the caliber 1861, 1863, and 1866 models, which are all based on the manual winding Lemania 1873 (I think that's the number). 1861 and 1863 are exactly the same except that the 1863 has a metal brake and is better finished because it's used in the display back models. The 1866 adds the date and moonphase complications to the base.

The 1861 is used in the moon watch, which is the speedmaster professional with hesalite crystal and steel back. It's Omega 3570 and is what the astronauts use. In theory, then, it's the only one that deserves the professional title. However, as the other ones are based on the same movement, Omega's given them the professional title and the whole first and only watch worn on the moon thing, even though they're not used, or ever have been.

The 1863 (sapphire back) is known as the Omega 3573, and the 1866 (moonphase) is known as the Omega 3576. These are current, as there's been other Omega models based on these movements in the past. So, the only real current moonwatch is the 3570. But all of these models have professional on them. Again, they're all manual winding, so that's a pretty easy way to tell.

4. There's at least one manual winding 1861 that isn't professional and it's the 1957 replica (probably because in 1957, which is when the speedmaster was originally released, Omega didn't call it professional).

5. Other speedmasters (part of Omega's chronograph line and kind of like a spinoff of the original professional - think of these as Melrose Place to 90210). Most of these watches are automatic, and I'm thinking of 3 base movements. 1. ETA 7750 (chronograph subdials at 6,9,12) 2. ETA 2892 with Dubois Depraz module added onto it (speedmaster reduced), and 3. The Frederic Piguet 33xx movements (standard tri-compax layout of the subdials at 3,6,9, but automatic, and with a date at 6). Most of these watches are autos and have dates, except maybe the speedy reduced. I'm guessing that most of them use sapphire crystals and have a water resistance of 100m, whereas the professionals are only 30-50m.

Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
There's a snoopy speedy on sale on sg-roc or swx if I'm not mistake, it's over 8k though.. Pursuer's discretion is advised :D

I love to own one of the cal.321 and change it's caseback to display caseback.. Don't know about you guys in sg, but over here in indo, service over at omega service center is less than pleasant and pricey, due to the shortage of parts..

Any vintage speedy owners wanna share their experience ?
Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
If I may offer my humble advice for collecting speedies. I have previously owned a regular speedy pro, a 50th anni patch, a Moon to Mars and two auto speedies and have come to these conclusions.

(1) Avoid all automatic speedmasters. Speedmaster Professional aka the moon watch is the only one worth collecting.

(2) Avoid paying over the top money for Limited Edition Speedmaster Professionals. Over the years Omega as released tons of limited edition moon watches, all of which are mostly dial variations and case back variations. You can get a good condition moon watch that will never go out of style for around 2.3~2.6k.

(3) If you want to distinguish yr moonwatch from run of the mill ones. I would suggest the Patch 50 Anniversary Edition. IMHO this is one of the best looking moonwatches around. The MTM is actually a number edition and in all honesty the planets on the subdials dont look that nice in real life.

Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
Automatic speedies are bad investments and lack the horological significance and durability of the moon watch =p .

Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
Seems like we got speedy fans here too, can't say I'm surprised, the watch is timeless to say the least..

@ bro kqxr: speedy with the golden seahorse is a beaut, I mean it is special, but it's pretty tough to fit into your black and white suit isn't it ? Thinkin of changing the bracelet to strap, but I reckon the gold seahorse is not gonna fit easily into a black croco strap ? I even thought of a brown leather strap to go along with the golden brownish seahorse logo
Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
Happy holidays kqxr :D because I read your inputs attentively, because I had my fair share of speedies and because I agree with this...

"kqxrseiko"

Disclaimer* All opinions are merely my own biased ones lol :D

... let me continue the conversation in good spirit

"kqxrseiko"

(1) Avoid all automatic speedmasters. Speedmaster Professional aka the moon watch is the only one worth collecting.

I agree that for collecting, especially with a view to value retention or appreciation, the Pro (especially a well-priced used one) is the one. Automatic speedies can be had for below 2k used, if disassociated from the whole speedmaster snobbery and considered as just another swiss automatic chronograph, they are hardly poorer value than a longines, tissot, louis erard, ball, tag heuer and so on. So yes, for collecting I would aim a used Pro (a new Pro will still depreciate sharply just like an Auto in my experience), but if someone is in the market for a nice used swiss chronograph below 2k, it is worth his/her time and money to take a look at the automatic speedies in the used market. Still better than most Balls and Tags and Guess' in my biased opinion. Not everyone stops at one speedy... we all need other speedies to buy after we get our standard Pro right?

I assume Big-E is in the market for ONE speedy (at least for the time being) though, so the basic Pro it has to be then.

"kqxrseiko"

(2) Avoid paying over the top money for Limited Edition Speedmaster Professionals. Over the years Omega as released tons of limited edition moon watches, all of which are mostly dial variations and case back variations. You can get a good condition moon watch that will never go out of style for around 2.3~2.6k.

I agree with this, but it is a truism isn't it? By definition all Pros are mechanically similar, and hence all LEs are cosmetic variations. I still want a Snoopy LE though - as long as my wife likes it, it will never go out of style. But the over-the-top prices have been putting me off

"kqxrseiko"

(3) If you want to distinguish yr moonwatch from run of the mill ones. I would suggest the Patch 50 Anniversary Edition. IMHO this is one of the best looking moonwatches around. The MTM is actually a number edition and in all honesty the planets on the subdials dont look that nice in real life.

I'd say go with whichever edition that fires up the imagination. For me the MTM and the Snoopy work a bit better on my imagination than the Patch 50. If we are allowed to expand the selection beyond the Pros, the non-7750 Racing CF that I own is actually my favourite Speedy. The disassociation with space travel, disassociation with schumacher (I'm not into F1), and just basic generic association with motorsports (red + racing + CF + chronograph + "speedmaster") captured my heart very well.

I bought this

shortly after I bought this

and up to today the CF still matches this

"kqxrseiko"

Automatic speedies are bad investments and lack the horological significance and durability of the moon watch =p .

I agree. They are bad but there are worse for the same money

In my biased opinion, auto speedies above 2k are bad investments (no matter how strictly or loosely we use the term), just like majority of the offerings from Tag, Ball, Guess, Longines, Sinn, Cyma, Titus, ...., and boutique brands below 2k. A lot of watches in the market at the price range of used auto speedies do not have horological significance (again in most sense of the term) either. Ceteris paribus people still buy Balls and Sinns and Guess and that's as good a reason as any for me to not rule out automatic speedies.

There are simply worse ways to spend the same money.
Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
Hi Herz bro, you have made very well founded points! I was being abit cheek when I did my posts haha. All the discussion is good for Big-E  Honestly, if I could spare the cash I would probably whack a Snoopy too...
Re: omega speedy pro on sgroc
There's a supposedly good conditioned manual speedy going for 2.6k on sgroc/swx! Comes with box, manual, cards, extra straps... watch dated 1999.

I think speedies cost relatively more for servicing, and that's holding me back in getting preowned with w/o proper servicing history. Likewise for Swiss auto chronos...

Thanks for all the insights from everyone, especially oosimm, Herz and kqxr bro.

A preowned speedy pro is definitely on my list for 2012, if ever a decently priced one comes along (and hopefully this time no need fire sale )

Initially I started this post with thoughts of getting a speedy reduced for my wife, but after the recent OS hoot, she seems quite happy. So the speedy pro is in my sights for me.

2.6k for a '99 watch seems a little steep actually  '99 means a 1861 right? I'm out of touch with brand new Speedy Pro pricing - don't they go for about S$4k?
bro aft 97 ish using cal.1861, chiu mean the current RRP of speedy... :D
omega speedy pro on sgroc
I was quite into speedy at one point in time and wanted to get one really badly.

To me, it is quite an icon of omega.

I will bookmark this for future reference if my interest re-ignite.

:) thanks guys for the very gd write up.

You might wanna consider the speedy sandwich too,, it's the one with display caseback, finished movement to boast and they change the hammer's material from plastic to steel.. Strap the sandwich on a black croco and you've got yourself a timeless dress watch :D

That is if sports model is good in your book as a dress watch
