Would appreciate some input from seniors here. After all, it's all your fault. I came into this forum looking to get a replacement strap for my skx171. Then started browsing around the forum a little. One thing led to another and boom, i feel like buying another watch! Decided to use my birthday next month as an excuse. :D

Did a little bit of research, and managed to find the Monster at petrolnut site for about SGD310. Didn't manage to find the air diver though. In the end only found it at higuchi for 32000yen, which translates to about SGD400. The higuchi site mentions 32000yen inclusive of S&H which I assume is shipping and handling I guess?

As much as i like the Citizen , it has quartz accuracy & Eco Drive charging system . I vote the Seiko bloody Monster , it looks Vicious . 8-)

What i see is a clear difference between a all mechanical versus hybrid system. The concern i have in mine, will be after sales serviceability, even when warranty finishes.



On looks, the CITIZEN is a clear classic and conservative design, the BLOODY FANGs SEIKO is a cult piece.

The Citizen's design is pretty mundane and nothing particularly stands out except the Eco Drive charging system, but like Ed.YEO mentioned serviceability years down the road might be an issue. A fully mechanical system is easily repairable by most watchmakers.



But at the end of the day it depends on what you want the watch for. If you need a Monday to Sunday all occasion watch, the Citizen might fit the bill better. Somehow as much as I think its cool, wearing a bloody tooth Monster for a Monday morning meeting with the bosses might be too casual for some

both are nice watches, made by respected watch companies who are known for their quality. either will be a good choice really, just choose whatever looks nicer to you.



as for myself i would go with the monster; i like the look of the monster series a lot and also i'm a lume addict. the seiko monster is possibly the best lume you can possibly find on any watch.

My vote goes for the Monster, it is just such a BEAST! I think it would look really good on a black and red nato or a hammer bracelet.

Haha yeah that was what drew me to the Bloody monster as well. Looks very fierce. Haha. But one consideration I have is that it might be too big for my puny wrist. I guess I'll have to go down to the shop to try it out.

While I like the Monster, the Citizen is made of titanium and monocoque to boot. The type of extension clasp on this watch is a great addition, and really should be used on more Citizens. It's ratcheting like the MM300's, yet not as finicky and much easier to open, though otoh it does not open as much (but more than enough to adjust for comfort) and does add two pushers on the side.



Still, the Monster, as cool of a watch as it is, is not all that refined a watch. If you want to argue the Monster vs the Ecozilla, that's another matter, but this Citizen is on a separate level. Looking at them side by side, you can just tell the difference in finishing. I'm not sure there's a direct Seiko auto to compare it with (and don't have any quartz to compare to) - my view is it is above the level of the Monster but below the Samurai / Sumo. Maybe on par with the steel Samurai's?



If I had to choose between the two... I'd say the Citizen. Again, more refined and looks better in a work setting. The Monster is a fun watch, but I'd say it looks slightly out of place under a shirt cuff.



FYI, I ordered mine from Higuchi. I understand it to be a JDM-only model. The DLC version was also very unique, but I think discontinued already.

Yes one concern I have is that I will be starting work soon, probably a few months time in fact, and will probably need something which will look presentable with officewear. I'm thinking my skx171 might be able to serve that purpose, will have to choose a proper strap though. Haha.



Anyway what are the concerns about serviceability? If it's within the warranty period, shouldn't be too much of a problem right? If after the warranty, will it be expensive? If only the distro knows how to service it, it will be expensive I guess. But do these watches normally need servicing? Sorry for the many questions, before these, I only used to own digital watches, which I grow out of before they even need servicing.

Can I ask what is the problem with serviceability? Within the warranty period shouldn't be a problem right? Is it hard to find someone who knows how to do it after that? Will servicing at the distro be expensive? Is it common for watches to need servicing? Sorry for the stupid questions. I haven't had a watch that I needed to service before. Used to own mostly digital watches before this so I'm really unsure.

Anyway one worry I have is ordering from Higuchi. Did you face any problems ordering from them? Also, it will probably incur GST right, if so, how did you pay for the GST?

It really depends on the kinda industry u work in daily.



If engineering or even design,monster Shld do fine.



Banking,accounting n such prim n proper industry, citizen would be good.



Both are different in terms of movement ,so such comparison is not an apple vs an apple.



Given a citizen eco drive vs Seiko solar would be more appropriate.



Of Cos final design boils down as well.



In terms of local agent svcing,I take citizen over Seiko ,for attitude. And possibly parts lead time as well.



If comparing on autos,there's not much concern. Most stand alone watch makers locally can svc both makes with ease.

As previously mentioned, CITIZEN's ECO DRIVE system is a hybrid system so as SEIKO's KINETIC, part electronic part mechanical.

After warranty overs, parts and workmanship cost will be definitely a major concern which your watch breaks down.

All mechanical movement like 4R3x or 7S3x is easy to repair, gets parts changed and certainly much cheaper to deal with than electronics which may hard to source if defective piece passed to any other watchmakers rather then the workshops of the respective ADs or makers. Hybrid system is complex in servicing, hence higher cost when handed over to ADs.



If you want something that looks good, can pair with office work attire, can play, can swim, get the SEIKO SOLAR Chrono. And then when your income stables, got more dispensable income for watch hobby, get those mechanical pieces.

well anyway, my vote goes to the monster - if you're talking about just base on looks.

if you're considering other factors like wearing it for work on a daily basis? then perhaps the citizen is a better dress watch to look at. then again, like cooliend mentioned.... nothing will stop you for wearing that monster under those cuff links.



in terms of movement... well lets just say I prefer the sweeping hands then the regular tick tocks.

as much as i love the monster, it is really heavy, my dad who is bigger sized than me does not get chunky watches hence still up to ur good judgement but movement wise i think monster is good cos now its hackable.

Ed, think you might be mixing up Eco-Drive with something else? E-D watches are only solar powered, so comparable to the new Seiko Solar movements than Kinetics. The PMX56 doesn't have any complications on it either, it's plain vanilla E-D like the Ecozilla, would hope servicing wouldn't be too expensive.... :?

Yea, the Monster is popular, but it's somewhat out-of-place in a more formal office setting, tho as phantom mentioned, it varies to a degree. Still, I can't see a Monster going with a suit unless you're trending. Again, I do like the Monster, but the Citizen is a more refined watch, both in it's more subdued styling as well as finishing.



I did remember I have a 7T62-powered Sportura SNA749... :oops: :lol: The PMX56 does have the edge in polish, but I'd say overall close. Still, the Ti construction makes a huge difference.



Can't remember how I paid GST (did I? ;)), but it's a fairly easy process once it hits SG borders. ICA will advise payment, and either you'll get a slip in the mail to pick it up from the ICA Payar Lebar branch, or Speedpost / FedEx / etc. will deliver it with a bill for GST and a $5 / $10 'processing' fee... wish I could just choose to pick-up instead...



But if it's borderline, sometimes it gets through w/o charge. The yen just keeps dropping though, and as of today, 32000 Japanese Yen equals 397.70 Singapore Dollar.... ;)

So I went down to K2 today to change my strap for my 171, and change the battery for my other watch. The gentleman before me bought more than $100 worth of straps! Own up who is it?!



Anyway Mr Goh was really a really nice guy, brought out a whole stack of straps to show me. Didn't make me feel uneasy that I didn't know anything, quite important imho. Some shop owners if business is good, don't bother about the new clueless customers, only want to serve the regular customers. This was clearly not the case here. I was very comfortable browsing around the place. Anyway there were a couple of straps with the "maratac" styling but I couldn't find one with white trimmings, so I just bought the flat vented strap. Was quite happy when he told me the price as I was expecting it to be more expensive. Then I changed the battery for my other watch.



After paying, just as I was about to leave, I caught my eye on the orange monster. Since I wanted to see if it would look weird on my wrist, I asked him if I could take a look at it. While he was taking it out, I asked if he had the new one, with red tooth. He hesitated for a while, then told me he had one kept in the back, and that it was the last piece. I was thinking wah so hot ah this piece?! Wa when I first held it in my hands, I think I stained my boxers a little. So sexy! Fiddled with it a little, then asked him about the price. Surprisingly it was much cheaper than what I found online! And he told me this is a J model, not too sure what's the difference though. So I told him I need a little time to think about it. So I took a stroll downstairs, was thinking of going home then I was thinking, "Hmmmm, this is a pretty good deal. Don't buy like wasted. Some more last piece!". So I decided to leave it in the hands of my gf, if she told me it was nice then I would get it. I sent her the picture, and no prizes for guessing what she said about it. Here we are:

As I was paying for it, he roughly showed me how to use the watch. It was then that I found out it could be hand-wound! Made me feel like such an Ignoramus, I always thought automatic watches must be worn/shaken to be charged. Haha.

Btw do gives some comments on the photo. Would be good if you can share some tips on how to improve it like framing etc. Newbie trying my hand at photography here.

Anyway, do you have any idea why I cannot view the watch marketplace? I believe I have met the minimum post counts. I understand why I cannot post a new thread there, but not too sure why I cannot see anything in the "Buy/Sell Watches and Watch Accessories" section.

Iirc I got the watch for about 200. Was that a good price? Anyway it was unused(I'm guessing so since it had the blue sticker on haha) and in good working condition. Checked according to the checklist you gave me. Didn't know there was a story behind him. Haha. Care to give a short summary?

yes, we migrated from hwz since 2 years ago, to a better home now :)



anyway 200 for an skx171 is a good buy. (no wonder i asked you to go for it) the last time I saw the 171 in mustafa was going for about 288 for grey market. well I'm sure his watches are all well taken care of, though I'm sure he got it at a better price. well about the story, maybe you can join us in a gathering next time and I'm sure many others here will be glad to share them. as for now, I guess lets just stick to posting about watches :lol:
