Looking forward to your first project.

What blue thread is that by the way? Nylon or linen?

Will be a challenge to do a 20 mm for a start, why not start with 22mm?

The blue thread is the japanese linen.

22mm.. I intend to cut 22mm den trim it to 20mm. Wana do the 1st strap for myself 1st then do the proper 24mm.. :)
Re: My Little Leather Strap DIY Workshop
Cut 20.5mm if you wanna do 20mm. 0.5mm should be enough for you to sand off and burnish.

If you cut 22mm, 2mm might be too much to sand off.

yes 4 times. Meaning if the stitching you are going to make is 5 cm... then the length would be 4 x 5cm = 20 cm.

no need to tie knot at both sides of the needles mei mei.... if tie then how to go thru the hole? :P

I would advise you to get some unwanted leather to practice the stitching first before doing it on actual work
Re: My Little Leather Strap DIY Workshop
Hahahaha.. YES korkor!!! :p
Re: My Little Leather Strap DIY Workshop
I think the leather i got it at the art friends r too soft cos i have trouble trimming off the skin n fur at the buckle side leather... Is that normal for a noob?? Hahaha
Re: My Little Leather Strap DIY Workshop
Maybe u wanna post a pic to show us mei mei?

Agree if the leather is too soft, will be very hard to trim.

If you find the leather a little soft, just find oil paper and put some EVA glue. Paste this under your soft leather. This will add a little stiffness for you to cut.

After cutting, just wash off the oil paper and the EVA glue dries clear. But pls apply EVA sparingly (thin layer would do).

The other way is to use 3M mounting glue. This one expensive than EVA (school) glue.

Hope this helps!

What sort of oil paper n where can i get it?
Re: My Little Leather Strap DIY Workshop
Some ppl call it oil paper or baking paper.

-Paste this using EVA glue under the soft leather (very thinly spread)

-Cut the leather to your required size, then...

-Use a wet cloth and go over the paper, since it is thin it will "wash away" thus leaving you with your required leather

-Proceed with your project

Hope this helps everyone with chrome-tanned leather.

cheers!
Re: My Little Leather Strap DIY Workshop
the baked pie looked very seducing than the Oil Paper. :P
Re: My Little Leather Strap DIY Workshop

took some time to cut out the board (i think the card board too hard). as a noob, i decided to cut out 21mm for the lug coz it give me more allowances to trim to 20mm. :P :P :P

finally cut out the leather unevenly

trying to trim off the 1cm end for the buckle side. kind of tough as i think the leather is a bit too soft but still manage to trim it off using a normal pen knife

waiting for free time to apply the glue.. stay tune..
Re: My Little Leather Strap DIY Workshop
You're doing well kokoro... awaiting your next post!

BTW, instead of using the "cardboard" as your template, you could also use the hard-board taken from a clipboard. This can tahan longer, to be re-used many times.

Skiving the ends is always a time consuming process, glad you did it well!
Re: My Little Leather Strap DIY Workshop
Oh. Okay okay.. Will bear that in mind.. Thanks ten10 :)
Re: My Little Leather Strap DIY Workshop

contact glue applied. hehehe

Re: My Little Leather Strap DIY Workshop
I just realied something..... you did not trim your tail.

Or you want your tail to be this way?

the edges a bit uneven, you can use sand paper to make it even.
