hi...new here...but have heard loads about GS...and one of my friends bought one 2 years back for around 12k...

I saw one at GS site which I like alot...SBGR061, and called up Thong Sia. after 10% is $6259. Too bad no stock now, otherwise would have fly down to grab it...

One thing that keep bugging us from young till old, is the thoughts on SWISS makes are usually the most stable choice when comes to spending big bucks on expensive timepiece. These thoughts maybe passed down from our grand parents time, till father and mother time, as well as those senior relatives around us. Hence, we're grown in that kid of environment where we would have heard, "When you get older, and if you want to have a stable choice, go for Rolex. It won't fail you..." Then there are some, who came from not so high income families, "When you can afford your own timepiece, go for the better SWISS, like RADO, TITONI, MIDO(this was when, when i was about 12, LONGINES, RAYMOND WEIL, TAGS as well as other big names haven't make themselves big yet...)... it won't fail you...". Some of the younger WIS here, who're born in the 80's, may have heard, "When you get older, and you can afford your timepiece, go for the SWISS, like Rolex or other makes with good brand reputations(this will be where OMEGA, LONGINES, Raymond Weil, TAGS as well as others kicks in...)... it won't fail you...".

So... it's a matter of how much we're exposed to such "teachings" or influence that makes us stop for a while before going forward to expensive Japanese makes. It's kind of... normal.
Re: If u could have just one SEIKO....

...better options like? ;)

If ask me to think of 1 SWISS that's competitive to GS, first thing that would come into my mind, will be the ZENITH @ the same price level.

@ 36000bph, and USD3200 ... this will be a competitor to GS...

Is there a better option at this price range than Grand Seiko? Probably yes, depending on what the potential buyer is looking for. Movement and reliability wise, Grand Seiko is tough to beat. But, if you want to buy a watch that can be flipped easily, immediately recognizable and as good as cash around the world, buy Rolex lor. Personally, I want to have a Grand Seiko in my collection. :P
Re: If u could have just one SEIKO....
i always had a thing with the Lange 1, but its too far out of reach and think will always be a dream. thought of getting the Omega double eagle once...but too commercialised.

my mind is set on getting the SBGR061, as i guess its was love at 1st sight and had gotten Thong Sia to call me once its here. had also asked my friend who bought the 12k GS to find out from his sources if can get it for me at a cheaper price. if not, will comtemplate getting from SeiyaJapan.com.

anyone know if seiyajapan is reliable? its around 1k cheaper than Thong Sia...

Number one was worn on a space mission by Richard Garriot, a billionaire and private space traveller. It was worn on a SPACEWALK and performed flawlessly.

Think most bros here are Seiko fans to begin with, so obviously we know (or would at least find out more about it than the average guy). At the end of the day, it's a personal choice and comparing apples against oranges against pears etc, which is better?

Swiss branding has and still is perceived better than Chinese, Japanese etc. Is it better? What are the requirements? Most people if they do buy a product(watch, car, clothes, homes) base it on perceived value. I am sure most bros here know that a GS unfortunately does not hold its financial value as well as a Rolex but is no way lacking in performance, built or design. So does it make it a worse investment? Only you can decide. Is someone who bought & is staying in an apartment in D 09 have a better apartment than those in other districts? The only thing we know is that he/she fork out more $$ to buy that place. Better or not at the end of the day only you can decide. Buy what you like and are most comfortable with and it is worth more than any watch out there which can cost 10-100 times more. ;)

Re: If u could have just one SEIKO....
i think I have too many "i wants" for seikos...

but out of all the ones i've owned, I'll have to choose the MM300.

for me it is a very versatile watch - it is toolish for weekend/casual, looks great on rubber/kevlar strap. Yet it holds its own in any formal occasion.
