Demagnetize a watch

So my sumo suddenly went from running a few seconds slow a day to +20s fast a day. Still within the movement's spec but I suspected it got magnetised so I held it against a compass...

If u can see the video I took, it drives the compass crazy.



A cheap Demagnetizer I bought sometime ago off ebay didn't work.



As it is running within the movement's -15/+25s per day specs, not sure if Seiko will do anything about it?



Where else can I go to have it checked out on a rate machine and demagnetized at the same time?

Did you remove the case back to demagnetize ?

my Spork got demagnetized and I recently bought a cheap $20 demagnetizer from eBay... works well now the watch runs well.



Maybe your demagnetizer failed?

Usually i remove back case.

Hmm I tried it again, this time moving the watch through the flux field multiple times and it worked. Heh user error....

Should not need to remove the case back(If you are doing it the usual(normal) way and 10-15seconds should be sufficient from the front. If really need be I suppose you can get it timed to check.

Not all watches that run fast are magnatized.

But watches that are magnatized run fast.



When the hairspring gets magnatized, the coils have a tendency to stick together, thereby reducing the amplitude, and increasing the frequency of the balance wheel.

After having 3 of my watches magnetized I have come to realise that magnetic field protection is more important in day to day life for watches than too much water resistance?

Don't leave your watches near magnetic sources.



Irks me when people post watches on handphones or near speakers.

What about auto watches that run slow? What could be the problem/s?

It could just be that it needs regulation, or it might need a sevicing, due to dried up oils or dirt in the gear train





Among other things, what can cause a watch to run slow is worn balance staff, worn main spring, rust on the hair spring, and curb pins touching the hairspring

Sounds serious...but when running slow it would have to be slow outside of the manufacturer stated specs for the movement right?

You are correct.



He never stated how slow it was running, I went from one extreme to the other.



It could very possibly be that it just needs a regulation.

Watch that run slow is over demagnetize :p
