Not good to handwind automatic watches

Hi bros



Heard that it is not good to handwind a automatic watch that has that capability. Reasoning being it will hasten the watch demise. Is it true?

A very much debated subject. Most auto movements can be hand wound without undue wear and tear. If u wear it every 2 days or so there isn't any need to hand wind?

I also heard that for those automatic watches that can be hand wound, it is not good to shake the watch to get it moving. How arghk?

Yah ... my friend working in the watch sales industry also say not advisable to shake watch to get it moving.

Nothing lasts forever anyway. Just don't be excessive.

The reason why hand winding is discouraged is because that translate into a very high speed action within the movement.



It also depends on the movement, I read about ETA, so it was due to linking the hand winding action to the same wheel handling the rotor movement.



Imagine spinning the rotor in high speed.



Like food, just moderate, it will be wind.

I called out specifically ETA as that's the one I'm aware.

If u r not wearing every 2 days, just wind it a few rounds to get it moving. It is advisable not to fully wind it. Worry that u might break the gear

I also heard for earlier versions of the Selita SW200, hand winding will cause some gears to break due to a design flaw.

No matter hand wind or not... mechanical movements are bound to wear and tear.

Here's a simple test for your reference or others to try...

Get a watch you seldom wear from Seiko or Citizen, even if it is auto, wind it up to get the movement moving. Wind it all the way to 30~40 rounds to get the spring "fully" or about wound up, then let the movement runs to it's stop about 1.5days later to their full stop. Re-do the cycle again, and observe. You will see that the movements, will take more winding rounds to get the seconds hand moving...



What's the summary here?

What i observed is that, when any one of us, despite having automatic winding system with our watch movements, we would still tend to wind our watches to the max such that the movements will continue to work for the next 36hrs or more... To most new watches(or new old stock... no matter what movements, 4R, 6R, Citizen calibres, ETA/Soprod/Sellitas calibres), it takes roughly 7~8 rounds of winding the crown to get the watch move. As time passes... the required number of rounds gets higher and higher, and some may take more than 20 rounds to get the seconds hand moving...

Certainly... some may say that the higher numbers of rounds need could be related to lubrication of the movements. However, most of us here are not the watchmaker who really understands the physics of mechanical in such a small size. Hence what we can conclude...

Wear and Tear is present in all mechanical movements.

SW200 is a 2824 clone.

But just note that the slight movements of the rotor through our hand/body movement is enough to wind up the watch. Try to figure out what happens to that wheel if you wind it manually.



Like what Ed said, there are bound to be wear and tear, just sooner or later.



It's the same debate as whether a watch winder is necessary or just introduce more wear and tear. :idea:

You are giving unnecessary stress to the rotor bearing system and increasing the exposure to dust and humidity, thus shortening the life span of the watch.

Maybe we could take a look into ETA 2801 and 7760, which are basically 2824 and 7750 with rotors removed.

With the rotors removed... they became handwinds immediately.:?:

Ed if you read the link, as an overview, they are the same but the wheel for the winding system has finer teeth for 2824.



So effectively it's being driven faster with smaller rotor movements as compared to hand winding.

Wear and tear will happen regardless you wind or not. That's why we need to send our watches for service. The same goes for us human that we aged and get old

Yup that was a few years ago. Gave it to my friend when i moved. :(

Relax guys. Dun worry too much on the wear and tear of automatic and handwindable watch. For all you know, the watch will still be moving after you are gone.

Life is too short to worry too much. Just enjoy your hobby.

i dont know how hard you guys shake your watch, but I am sure you have noticed you dont need to shake it so vigorously to get it started. Gentle side to side shake will do.

I am also sure your watch takes on a lot more sudden movements now and again throughout the day.



As for the hand winding of automatic watches.

I have come across several discussions about the ETA 2824 having wear and tear from crown winding, but i doubt it is a cause for concern... there are ALOT of ETA 2824 in ALOT of watches out there.

If this was a serious issue, there will be a lot of watches coming back and ETA 2824 would not have lasted as long as it has.



The SA was probably just being helpful by giving a kind advise... (or he's really trying to sell you a watch winder ;) )

If handwinding a automatic watch is bad, why do watch maker keep making them?

Anyway, for me I like to caress my watch every night, wind or shake them and prepare the watch I am wearing the next day.

That's where the fun is, not worrying about wear and tear.

for me, i dun really mind about the handwind part.



usually i swirl to kickstart it and wind it about 15-20 turns of the crown and strap it on.



for delicate parts within the movement, it's part & parcel for wear & tear.

Seiko movements are known to be hardy and reliable. Definitely not made from tofu. Seiko is my first choice for daily wear watches. I think we should worry less and wear our watches in good health.
