Choose: Alpinist or Somes?

Yesterday I brought home my new SNZH57 and my wife rolled her eyes.

"Another sporty watch, why didn't you get a dressy watch instead?"

I am interpreting this as permission granted to buy another watch in the next couple of days. I have had my eyes on the Orient Star Somes and also the Seiko Alpinist SARB017 for some time now.

I like the Orient because it has a clean look and also a power gauge.

But the Seiko's green dial is damned classy and I am a sucker for green.

Which should I get and why?

a close fight between these 2 but ultimately I will go with the Alpinist personally.

I like the masculine thick case of the Orient Somes but I find the PR indicator thickness, the numeric font type in the PR indicator, the numerics in the sub-second subdial used is too 'big', making the sub-dial look 'cluttered'. If they do away with the 60,15,30,45 numbers and just used hashlines, it might have looked better.

The hour markers are nice, making the whole look more rugged but the hr/min hands kind of backfired it ,lol. It's a bit too thin against the strong markers

I'll go with this Somes anytime over the former Somes

Seems like this is the newer Somes model.

Now, between this new SOmes & Alpinist, hmmm, I'll have the same dilemma as you now. hahaa, especially when there's a blue Somes variant now :lol:

I liked both, but my heart goes to the new Somes, so classy looking.

I like all the photos of the Alpinist I see on the internet, however, when I tried it on, it just feel too small for my liking.

Haven't tried on the Somes but I guess it would wear bigger than the Seiko.

I would go for alpinist.. Unique green dial with golden hands and markers is a great combo. Slap on a black croc/lizard/ostrich strap for a dressier look.

I would choose the 2nd generation Somes

the 2nd gen one flanked by the 1st gen Somes.. =D (some of the straps are aftermarket ones)

there is a black and white dial version. But the blue one is the nicest imho... =D

This is the 3rd gen somes

TS, I also like green dial but IMHO. I take the 2nd Gen Blue Somes over the Alpinist becos I don't like the crown control feel for the chapter ring.

2nd Gen Somes has

-a few dial color variation

-Dome Sapphire caseback

-sapphire glass

-Power Reserve

-Hand wind and hacking movement

-Bigger case diameter

Alpinist

-popular model w two color option

-legendary 6r15 with handwind and hack

-unique twin crowns

-unique green dial

-sapphire glass

-see thru' caseback

Buy what you wang lah. Why bother what others think. To ask for opinions and relative merits is ok but in the end go with your heart.. no horserun one..
