my first g shock mod

my first g shock mod
Essentially to remove the bezel paint and install a 5 ring zulu strap. This process has been done by many others before, see here http://mygshock.com/wiki/Stealth_a_G-Shock and here http://forums.watchuseek.com/f17/how-remove-paint-bezel-331091.html. I used the modified version, ie wetting the bezel with goof-off solvent instead of soaking it in the slovent. This is just to share my personal experience and thoughts.

I used the kitchen table to do the preparation work. You need a workshop (I used my bathroom) which is well ventilated (I just left the bathroom door open), a solid workbench (my hand basin) with easy access to running water (my water tap over the basin).

Tools I used:

Goof-off (S$18.90 from Home-fix diy)

cotton buds/Q-tips

tooth brush

screw driver (a free gift from optical shop)

glass container (wife's used make-up cream container)

The g shock is the dw6900g, which looks like this (taken from www as I didn't take the before mod picture)

After the mod, it now looks like this

Preparation:

1. Remove the bands by releasing their spring bars with a screw driver

2. Remove the 4 screws on the watch; 2 on each side near the lugs.

3. Dig your finger nail under the bezel between the 2 stainless steel control buttons, pull and stretch the bezel just enough to lift it over 2 control buttons.

4. Push the lifted bezel over the other side of the watch, and the whole bezel will just come off.

Brushing:

5. Pour some goof-off into the glass container.

6. Dip and soak one end of the cotton bud in the solvent.

7. Rub the wet end of the cotton bud on the painted area of the bezel; apply generously and leave it wet for about 2 minutes.

8. Use the tooth brush and brush gently over the painted area; side to side, round and round

9. When you see enough of the paint has come off, wash the bezel under the running water.

10. Shake excess water off and air dry the bezel.

11. When it is dry, you might see there is some paint yet to be remove, then repeat step 6->10. I repeated the process twice.

Putting the bezel back:

12. Start on one side of the watch, let the 2 control buttons go thr their holes in the bezel. Make sure the G button is properly aligned.

13. Pull and strech the bezel on the other side so that the remaining 2 buttons go thr their holes as well

14. Put back the 4 screws that hold the bezel in place.

Zulu strap:

15. Install the strap adapters (got them from my other g shock)

16. String thru the zulu strap.

Cleaning up:

17. Clean up the workplace to keep wife happy. :D

I took about one hour to do all these.

Not much difference in my opinion. It's like comparing SKX007 and SKX007J.

Made in Japan models are more for the "premium" models. Frogman, MR-G, MT-G range..

Most vintage models are Made in Japan but now is quite hard to find it. Especially models before the year 1996 mostly is Made in Japan.

My Frogman says hi!
