Birth Year Watch

Birth Year Watch
Hi,

I'm interesting in getting a Seiko manufactured in 1979, the year I was born.

1. What would be the best way to go about searching for one?

2. Is there any general way to ascertain a vintage Seiko's year of manufacture?

Any help appreciated!
Re: Birth Year Watch
You will need to do some research on which Seiko calibre is manufactured in 1979.

As a general rule of thumb, Seiko calibre in the past has a production run of approx 10yrs.

The 70s calibre would include most of the collector favorites like 6139(?), 6138, 4006 just to name a few.

There is a Seiko serial number production calculator online somewhere. Perhaps the more knowledgeable Seiko gurus can advise.

All the best in your hunt!

I managed to find these two pcs in my birth month and year

Re: Birth Year Watch
Just search the net, you will find the serial number calculator.

The first digit represents the year and the second the month, except Oct, Nov and Dec which is represented by O, N and D.

Of course this goes for a decade only. So like Bro Big-e-294 said u would need to know the years that the particular caliber was made.

Happy hunting.
Re: Birth Year Watch
Thanks! I managed to find the two calculators below:

http://www.csce.uark.edu/~jgauch/photos/seiko/"http://retroseiko.co.uk/seiko-serial.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer">http://retroseiko.co.uk/seiko-serial.htm" false;

I was hoping to find a shop that categorises watches by year of manufacture. Looks like it won't be that straightforward. :)
Re: Birth Year Watch
October is 0 (zero) iirc
Re: Birth Year Watch

Good luck!
Re: Birth Year Watch
Maybe can start a SIC thread on seikos with production year frm 70s till maybe mid 80s.

Purely a SIC thread with minor discussions with correct yr and must be original parts.

I think it will be useful for those who are hunting for own birthyear model.

Hunting one with own birthyear should be fairly easier as compares to if hunting for one with correct birthyear & month (unless u are super lucky, haha)

Check the serial number.

For production year 1956, the serial number will start w '6'

If u r born Jan 1956, then serial number will be 61xxxx

Oct 1955: 60xxxx

Nov 1956: 6Nxxxx

Dec 1956: 6Dxxxx
Re: Birth Year Watch
It depends on the model of the vintage.

1950s model should be very old dress watch models, definitely not diver series, not even 62MAS

Mine's actually a 1603; SS instead of WG.

Btw, what's a pie pan? I know it refers to the watch dial, but not sure what it actually is.

I see. You're right, that dial is pretty unique. Adds visual interest and depth.
