Advice Required - Next Seiko
Ok, with this http://forums.seikoclubsg.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=6122" false; , I am now planning on my next Seiko and I have narrowed the options down to:



6159-7010 (original mech tuna) - price seems to be around S$2500 onwards, depending on condition.

The 2 issues I have with this is authenticity and servicing/ replacement of parts :o .



vs



SBDX003 (MM limited edition) - for me, the main thing about this piece is its gold frame for its markers. But to pay up S$5k for the gold frame when I already have my PMMM..... :roll:



vs



SBDB008 (tuna + spring drive) - this is the most expensive of the 3. I am not sure if I can even find one???! Also worried that I will tired of it soon, as I had the 7549-7009 and 7549-7010 before and sold them, but then I sold them because I was worried about their quartz parts.....



Any guidance will be appreciated. TIA!

Thanks for the input on the 6159.

For the SBDX003, I had the MM version before. Found it too 'tall' and don't like the bracelet (prefer a simple super oyster style type), and sold it off after about 2 months.

I think I will start hunting for a 6159 and SBDB008 .... :mrgreen:

I think a watch will only be a keeper if there is no downside to the buyer. Since you see the downside of these 3 watches, you should not buy, as you will feel like selling it later. These 3 watches are not your perfect watch.

but i am resigned to the fact that i am a watch-slut...i think todate, over 100 watches passed through me

so somehow now itching for a seiko/tuna, and no watch's perfect, so....

The present mkt price and supposedly servicing in Jpn only also deter me.

Depends bro. To me, some of my Casio watches are close to perfect and even arguably perfect. I like Casio.

This is what happened to me:

Years ago, I wanted the PANERAI Luminor Marina - PAM000111 so badly that I ended up buying a Glycine Airman, a Zeno (a PAM homage), an actual PANERAI, the base model Luminor - PAM000112. Then finally I chanced upon the 111 - G series some more, my heart sang to me and instinctively bought it outright without a care in the world. I have since sold the Glycine, the Zeno. I wanted to hold on to the 112, but then again, when I saw the SBDX011 Emperor Tuna, my heart sang to me once more and I had to let the 112 go. Now I have the 111 and the 011.

Honestly, I am still thinking about the 6159-7010. But considering the facts and weighing the odds, the Emperor, in my books, is indeed a sure winner - hands down. Why? Correct me if I am wrong but she is the biggest tuna ever produced by far - 52mm diameter + 17mm thick, caliber is 8L35 - automatic + hand-wind capability and is hacking, sapphire crystal and using hex screws for the titanium shroud and the a signed screw down crown.



For now, my heart is fully content and I don't see any next SEIKO in sight, so until then Bro and good luck in your hunt. Do let us know how it works out. :lol:

newbie here. Thinking of a SBDC007J1, as I am more into Ti watch for daily wear. Did not see any review of this watch? any comments?



Also, I can get it direct at Japan, is it good? I dun think such watch needs to be repaired within the warranty period, right?

When you purchase the 6159 tuna, your are truly buying a part of Seiko history.

The 6159 tuna is the result of 7 years of research by Seiko engineers.



It is without at doubt an achievement in dive watches:

1.The first Titanium diver in the world.

At a time with no one really know how to work with Ti, Seiko managed to pull it off. Working with Ti is hard enough but think early 70s where production tech is not what it is today. I have read that the shroud screws are full Ti and the Seiko guys didn't know how to mark the screwhead, so in the end each screw head has hand-sawed for the philips grove! This was 1970s.

Ti was used because it is tough, highly corrosion resistant, lightweight and antimagnetic.



2. the first diver with vented rubber dive strap.

Nowadays most of us dislike the seiko rubber strap (myself included), but the vented dive strap was designed and created from scratch by seiko for the 6159 tuna.

The idea being that the vented strap will contract and expand as you dive and ascend. The watch will always be firmly strapped to your wrist.



3. The Seiko engineers double the WR depth from previous models 300m to 600m



4. The special built/designed rubber seal and case design to prevent Helium to penetrate the case was probably the biggest achievement in this watch.



5. The Ti shroud. - enough said



6. high beat 36000bph 6159 movt.



7. lume!



Servicing the 6159 cal shouldn't be a big issue.

Parts is definitely a concern, but should not be a deterrent imho.

So if you are gonna invest in a part of Seiko history, then try to get the best available 6159 your budget allows.



This watch i believe had a short production run 1975-1978.
