Seiko mm300 sbdx001

Seiko mm300 sbdx001
Hi guys, recently been really tempted to get the mm300 sbdx001. As such, did some looking up and found that this is one "solid" watch. Perhaps owners of this watch could shed some light on their experience with it. Or even provide some advice for a potential buyer like myself. Btw i am pretty noob when it comes to in depth knowledge on watches like movements etc.. appreciate the input guys. Tks !
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
Its hell of a watch. Lets see wat i can say about this babe after ownign it for a year or so. Upfront first---i own a skx007 among a couple of other vintage reissue chronos, so i cant really compare with other more modern watch against the mm300.

The most talked about things about the mm300 i see online are the braclet, movement, crystal, weight/height, crown and case.

1st of the bracelet. Many ppl say the bracelet is inferior compared to other part of the watch although I personally think the bracelet is pretty decent. Brushed surface and polished sides with seiko's diver clasp. Feels darn solid compared to my more budget diver(yobokies evoS and some random cheap "swiss"). One reason i can think of ppl complaining is due to them comparing the mm300 against the rolex/omega bracelets which i admit i do not have a fair time of dooling around with to give a fair comparison. The other reason is probably due to the weight and height of the mm300.

The mm300 is pretty heavy and tall. I find i need a more tighter than average bracelt fit to prevent it from sagging and swinging around my wrist. When the watch sags/swings around the wrist, it make the bracelet feels light and cheap. This imo is not the problem with the bracelet but an overall balancing issue. About the height, its pretty tall so might have problems if you are going to wear a long sleeve shirt. I have another watch for long sleeve occasions so it dosent concern me. The mm300 looks dressy enough for a diver so if it can fit your long sleeve shirt, i say why not use it as a dress watch as well.

The only thing that i'll give a not so high points is the crown. It has no logo(bummer) and you have to be very careful when you try to align and screw it back in. It is easy to misalign the threads and strip the threading. I'm trained with screws, spanners, bolts etc and even so i have my doubts about the strength of the crown and threads. Its kinda of a turnoff considering all other parts seems robust enough to take a good beating only for this small crown to spoil the whole party. Especially if you watch rotate and have to do this everyweek......

Now the case. You probably now by now its a monocoque case and only accessible by the front so servicing will be an issue. I read that Mr Goh can do some work on the mm300 but i'm not sure to wat extent. But if you are going into these "exotic" watches, servicing is a price we all have to pay. Iirc, its about sgd600 per overhauling with the AD who will send it back to Japan(somebody correct me if i am wrong). The monocoque case is one of the defining features of the mm300 if you ask me.

Last but not least is the movement. 8L35, the undecorated version of the Grand Seiko 9s55. Its probably one of the best conventional non-complication movements out there. Nice power reserve, automatic, able to hand-wound and quick set date.
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
You sir, deserves a THUMBS UP for a splendid write-up on this watch. It sure cleared many of my queries on this awesime looking watch.

I am especially concern with the crown after having you say that it is easy to round the threads. Looks like its gotta be an everyday watch for me if I were to acquire it (which I most definitely be more than happy to make it so)

Which brings me to my next question : for watches in general, can all parts or rather mechanisms be replaced / repaired ? After repairing, would the integrity of the watch still be retained? Especially so, being a diving watch.

Purchasing : don't mind me asking where did you get yours? Any sources where the bros here could point me to in my search for this piece? Would like to scout for the best price possible.
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
I almost pulled the trigger on this watch, liked the design, especially the bezel and also the fact that it's a high quality watch that flies under the radar. Unfortunately i decided to hold off on the purchase as:

1. From what information i can find on the internet, i am not terribly impressed with the 8L35 movement found in the MM300, sure it's a undecorated Grand Seiko level movement, but accuracy wise it seems it's been a hit and miss or luck of the draw for owners, some report fantastic COSC level accuracy while some report pretty mundane or sometimes not so good accuracy. Also being a JDM watch, servicing and repair will be a pain in the ass; probably need to send back to Japan as if Mr. Goh of K2 does not want to work on the MM300, i don't know who else can do a professional job here in Singapore.

2. The price has also gotten quite crazy over the past few years, at around $2400 - $2700 now, i have many other choices from brands with service centres in Singapore and also longer warranty periods at this price range. If i can live wihtout proper after sales support then a whole slew of micro brands are also worth considering at this price point.

But end of the day if OP likes the watch, then buy it lah haha
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
Hmm I guess there's always two sides to a coin. Good to hear of the downsides too. Perhaps I should give myself a chance to look at others of the same price range :?:

It be quite cumbersome to have the watch sent to japan for repairs. Any idea hows the reliability or failure rate on this piece ?

Any recommendations of other models or makes that is of the same range or lower?
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
What I liked about the watch:

The case is very well constructed with a mix of brushed and polished surfaces

The bezel is a joy to turn, I don't think I ever had another watch with such fluid bezel action.

The 8L35 movement keeps good time, I won't say great but its better than some 2824-2s in the same price range.

What I dislike about the watch:

The bracelet

Firstly I will touch on the clasp, I didn't like the feel when locking or unlocking the bracelet, it feels not much better than that of the Sumo or Monster. Seiko has also decided to use a titanium clasp with the steel bracelet and I cannot help but notice the mismatch in color between the clasp and the bracelet. It is not the best clasp in the market but still better than some of it's competition such as the clasp on the Sinn U1 bracelet or older Rolex clasps.

Secondly, the bracelet links itself are rather lose and have a fair amount of play that I did not expect, it bothered me to be able to see my skin through these gaps.

Finally, the endlinks fits lower on the case as compared to the lugs. The tolerance between the case and the end link was also slightly underwhelming, I was able to wobble the end links at times despite fitting it properly to the case.

The Bezel

I mentioned earlier I like the bezel action on the MM300 but there were some issues with the bezel. I noted on several occasions that a slight brush against the bezel could rotate it, however I don't think this is of a major concern if you don't dive with it . The polished bezel surface is also a fingerprint and scratch magnet.

As for repairs, case integrity would depend on who you sent the watch to and if they have the tools to ensure the watch remains water resistant to its rated depth. You also should be able to get access to replacement parts as long as the watch is still in production. Thereafter, it would depend on the parts policy of each company. I know Seiko has a 10 year parts policy on Grand Seikos but I was not able to get any information regarding their other products.

Buying a watch which is a complicated mechanical device with many moving parts, reliability and failure rate really depends on your luck, heng heng no issues over many years, unlucky and u get a lemon, hence my preference for a brand or model that has good support and service infrastructure in place.

Perhaps it's because of my recent experience with my Golgo tuna black coating peeling off, I was unlucky and got a lemon. And since it is a JDM model, thong sian wasn't keen to help while seiko Japan tai chi / flip prata and told me to approach thong Sia for assistance. So now I've sent the watch back to seiko japan at my own expense, let's see what they will do. Thank god it's not an expensive watch like a GS , worse come to worse I write it off.... Hence my reluctance to buy the mm300 now cos you never know if you will get a lemon and so far thong Sia and seiko japan level of service has been very disappointing.

Dressy dive watch of around 2500 nett? Logines hydro conquest, longines legend diver, tissot sea star, mido ocean star, ball skin diver, Hamilton navy series, lots of choice, go check them out at AD.

If u are into micro brands even cheaper....

Great reviews by all. Shop around by all means but I reckon you will be hard pressed to find another watch that has such a high grade inhouse movement and overall finishing. Brand recognition is another matter as most still regard seiko as a cheap watch.

So far I have no issues with my MM300. Seiko makes some of the most reliable watches that are available. Of course we cannot discount lemons that may pop up now and then. Thats why I always want to handle the piece before I buy.

Good luck in your hunt. Buy only if you really like the piece.

Cheers.

For about the same price with local service centers, I would suggest

Longines Legends Diver

Oris Aquis Date

But personally I will pick this preowned.

Yeah preowned sword hand sea master is a good choice, COSC certified 1120 movement easy to service and repair...

If within warranty period and it consistently performs outside of parameters then yes the manufacturer will regulate for free unless they can proof u damaged the watch in some way.

Great watches all especially the Omega. But none have in house movement like the MM300. Not that ETA based movements are lower class, far from it in fact. Finishing except for the Omega again is distinctly not in the same league as well. That is just my personal opinion of course having spent some time with the Oris and owning still the Omega. And the Omega new would cost much more than the MM300. Just food for thought. Cheers.

Was looking at this piece through the display window yesterday at Vivo. Sure looks darn good! But the price is........differently league liao.
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
So i've decided to give myself a chance by going down to bencoolen and see see look look. What caught my eye was a pre-owned Omega Seamaster Chrono . It was a 2002 piece, just watch itself and selling for about $2.8k. Saw the Oris Aquis Date and Longines Legends Diver too, but hmmm.... let's say they didn't really appeal to me.

SMP300 chrono solid watch though a bit thick. But 2.8k for a 11 year old watch a bit on high side I think.......?
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
Yeah probably it is, considering it's age and the fact that it don't include the full-links, boxes etc. Simply love the feel, size, looks of it though. I'll prolly add it to my list of watches to consider and also this Omega Seamaster...

Perhaps you guys point me to any reputable shops selling pre-own watches or private sellers of these watches?

Anyhow, back to the mm300. Say, if it were to come from TS, won't that mean for any future warranty claims / repairs / servicing will be done by them and not sent back to Japan?
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
I believe they will still sent back to Japan. But of course on warranty, it should be on their cost. Outside of warranty then they will quote you the total cost as with any other brand of watches and any other AD with particular watches that need overseas service (even if they have service center here)

Here the consideration is whether this difference is worth the substantial price gap. If you feel that it is, then by all means get from TS. Happy hunting.
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
I'm sure that during warranty all costs will be on them but it'll be "leceh" if they had to send back to japan for repairs and such. It'll probably take longer than expected.

Hmm... starting to see the downside of this watch when it comes to repair and maintenance.

Saw in another thread, bro balzebub was mentioning that the Tuna with 8L35 movement would be a better buy to the mm300.

Perhaps anyone could feed their inputs on why the Tuna is more iconic to the mm300?

Shops : Any bros could point me to the reputable shops here in SG which carries the mm300 and Tuna? Would love to go down and have a feel
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001

I believe even if it is a TS set, they will still sent it back to Japan for servicing. It is still pretty much a Japan Domestic Model despite its widespread availability these days.

For the Omega, search local watch forums, they do come up pretty often with box and papers.

Yup id guess can foresee that happening. Have decided to consider a couple of other pieces before I jump the bullet.
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
First off, Tuna with the 8L35 movement would cost about 800 to 1000 more than MM300. Other mechnical Tuna would cost more as they are out of production mainly and therefore collectables.

I suppose Tunas are more iconic as they are easily recognisable and uniquely Seiko. However, their size puts some off. The MM300 is also iconic in its own way.

You should not worry unduly about repairs as Tunas also need to be sent back by TS. So does some models of other brands. In any case servicing is only required once evry few years. Who knows, if you are the sort that changes watches, the peice would be sold off by then. Sending the peice back is quick and just takes only slightly longer than servicing locally.

The criteria as far as I am concerned when buying a watcg is whether it sings to you. The rest is secondary once the affordability test is passed.

Happy hunting.

PS Big Time has both peices but onoy if you are lucky. Currently I think they have a MM in stock.

Have a few compliment on the vintage look of the watch but most ppl will "gasp" :o :o when they know of the price of it. It's actually a flashy looking watch but not a flashy watch since its a seiko and not a rolex.....if you know wat i mean. Ppl notice it cause its a great looker, tall and rather big but brush it off since its a Seiko. And i really like that.

Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
Hsha yeah know what you mean. I kinda like the idea of being low profile too and only the user of mm300 knows the true quality of it.

One can never go wrong with a rolex and one can never go wrong with a seiko too !

Shaggyangel : read some prev threads and I believe the guy's based in Jkt Indo and he ships over the mm300 here. Did ya get taxed bro? Warranty wise, does one gotta go through him for claim. Oh yeah one question, how does International warranty works? Applicable to certain countries only?
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
I believe the warranty is stamped by an indo AD for seiko. So it should be valid? But I think the mm300 being a 8L35 movement and solid block case design, u will likely have to send it back to seiko japan for any service or warranty work as it's JDM.

Shogun is titanium, many good reviews on the net, never had the chance to try a real one, think someone was selling his on one of the forums, don't know still available or not. Quite a rare bird in Singapore. What kills it for me are the monster hands and high price tag...double that of a Sumo...would love to transplant a full MM300 set of hands into a Shogun though, wonder if that is even possible.

In fact the i was torn between a Shogun or Tuna, but decided on a Tuna.

Yep, I have both Shogun and Sumo, both are awesome pieces. Prefer Shogun to the Sumo, it's light, classy and very comfortable on the wrist. Contrary to some people's opinion I actually like the monster hands. Some like it, some don't.

I would have to agree to each his own. I guess what drew my attention to it is how comfortavle the watch sits on the wrist for many who reviewed it. Also the facr thst it has dia-shield coating makes it resistant to scratches and that mak3s it practical for everyday usage.

Had the same dilemma once. This was how i ranked them.

1)SMP- for ease of service, accuracy and well.. im a sucker for bond stuff. Didnt get it in the end due to price. Pre-owned ones look enticing though.

2)mm300 - flipped it twice. Due to poor bracelet and fit. Accuracy is disappointing for a 2k+ watch. It really, really looks nice though. Received lots of attention

3) sumo - comfortable and sleek looking case. Flipped it thrice cos i hated how poorly constructed the hands are.

4) shogun - handled it. Didnt like the titanium. Didnt like the monster hands

If u arent a sucker for in house movement in your divers you could also consider the tag ar500, ball em2 diver, and sinn u1. Flipped my u1 twice and got the tag(yea i know) in the end. Nice daily beater. Just have to get a gd discount :)

Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
Hmm for me it would be:

1. Omega SMP : 2254.50 (nice sword hands and 1120 movement easily serviced by an watch maker) or 2220.80 (Classic bond watch looks and if u can find the 2500D is accurate and reliable, both watches are slim and able to be worn in most circumstances, under the radar looks but still a very recognizable brand)

2. Seiko Shogun (titanium feels better on the wrist and it is a classy watch, 6R15 movement can be serviced by any competent watch maker)

3. Seiko Sumo (very good value for money, black or blue are good dress diver choices, plenty of mods possible for this from bezel to bracelet clasp to sapphire crystal etc, 6R15 movement easily serviced in sg, but may be too thick and heavy for more dressy situations?)

4. Seiko MM300 (just too expensive right now, too many differing reports on the accuracy of the 8L35 movement, due to the case design and movement, getting it regulated or serviced will be a pain, overall placed last in priority on my list)

Just my 2 cents worth.

Gotcha! Tks! At least now I roughly know the benchmark.

So far my list is as follows:-

-mm300

-sumo

-shogun

-Omega SMP

How would you guys prioritse this list? :)

Hi, what's wrong with the Sumo hands?[/quote]

Im really puzzled by my observations as well. Of those i owned(3) and those i handled(many), i realise that when you look closely at the sides of the hands, you will notice that the silver paint is not applied uniformly. It looked as if the hands are made up of three layers, silver base - lume - silver lines on top. So from the sides it look like some parts of the lume leaked out? Do i still make sense? Lol

Or mayb im just too anal haha.

Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
Kinda like bro bish and balzebub list. Useful inputs by both. Really appreciate it guys.

Ok from the way I see it, my list for now is

1.Omega, either smp or the 2254.50. Can foresee wearing it everyday.

2.Sumo, love the fact that its the most affordable amongst the rest and movement is the same as below....

4. Shogun, being the same movement as above and double the price makes it no.4.

5. Mm300, after seeing the feedbacks by the guys here I may just give it a miss but still for now it'll still remain in my list.

Saw a local guy letting go his 2254.50 for 2.6k. Complete with boxes and full links. Is it reasonably priced?
Seiko mm300 sbdx001
2.6k for 2254.50 ? It will depend on the age and condition of the watch head and bracelet, if only have minor scratch from wear with no marks on bezel and crystal and no dents/dings. Serial number must be clearly etched on lug and match warranty card. Screw down crown action must be smooth. Need to also consider service history? Red dot present? Globe present? Is bracelet links still tight and good? Do a routine check on seller via search function on the forum he posted on and maybe even google to see if there has been any complaints ? Last of all, safer to deal at Omega service centre to check if it's the real deal.

Check out the usual local sales forums like sgroc, swx etc got a few seamaster pro on sale..
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
Hmmm. Still quite puzzled at bros saying the MM300 keeps a bad time..... care to share how bad it was? Cause I never really timed it, just maybe wore for a couple of days then rotate to another watch liao. So for that couple of days no issue with the time....or maybe I was just lucky.:):)

To TS, out of the above with your budget, I think the best will be the omega or the mm300. Omega is 2nd hand though and if you dont mind the "Wah, Omega siol". Its connected with a certain prestige and with it comes the flashy baggage. Adchili with the mm300 I also kena a few "Why you so dumb get a seiko and no buy Tag". Lolx. As for servicing, any bros can share how much it cost to service an Omega?

For sumo and tuna, cant really say much since I never dig them, feels like its more of a seiko enthusiast thing. Probably need to read the history and lineage to appreciate it. And in this price range, some Orient will come into play as well

By the way, TS only looking at dive watches? If you are into dress watches there are still a few other worthy consideration.
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
Servicing the omega 1120 runs about $700+ if it is serviced at Swatch Group, around the price of a MM300 service at TS.

Both movements of course can be serviced cheaper elsewhere.
Re: Seiko mm300 sbdx001
Serviced 1120 before for $650 at swatch, including polishing of case and bracelet with a 2 year warranty and little blue dot...quite reasonable considering they quoted me 550 to service my Hamilton. Anyway I think 1120 still considered a current movement. No idea about MM300 servicing costs though.

I guess im still weighing my options and still undecided presently. As I'm in no hurry to get a watch, I'll prolly scout around to see which suits me best.

Hmm I must say im a sucker for divers. Presently own 2 of seikos divers. The black monster and solar chrono. Lovin em! Haha.
