Shogun and Sumo

Hi folks.

Short Story!

The first Seiko I had was about 20 years ago, back when I was in Highschool.

It was stolen from me at gun point (please don't ask where lol!).

It was a painful and traumatizing experience that I would never want to re-lived.

And it's not even a high end Seiko, I was not really much in to watches at that time so I could not remember the model, It is an Automatic Diver Watch.



Since then, I had never gotten the chance to own a Seiko watch again.

And I am planning to get one this time.

I have been considering on getting either of these 2 (If I get lucky in getting a Shogun).

Appreciate your thoughts on this 2 watches.

20 years ago (early 90s) it might have either been the 6309-7290 (slim cased 6309 divers) or 7002 divers. The 6309 divers ended production in 1988 so you may have the tail end of the production of 6309-7290s.

The 7002 divers were the replacement for the 6309 series. The 7002 was produced from 1988 to 1996. So there is a good chance you may have a 7002.

Both these models are still available on ebay and on watch forums. You just have to read up more on them as nowadays there are plenty of 6309s and 7002 that have been cobbled together with aftermarket parts.



So back to the present - the Sumo and Shogun are 2 good choices for current Seiko auto divers. They are similar in some aspects but are quite different animals actually.

Similarities : - Both use the 6R15 auto movt which hacks and handwinds

- Both are rated to 200m

-

Difference :

- Material : Sumo - stainless steel; Shogun titanium . This a is a BIG difference and affects the weight, feel and looks of the watch significantly

- Price and market segment - Shogun - higher end with higher price , Sumo - more of a mid-ranged diver

- Availability - Sumo - easier to be found on resale market and also easier to flip; Shogun - rarely seen on watch trade forums

- Design - different design. Sumo is more rounded and curvy whereas the Shogun has a slightly more angled case, reminds me of the Sammy.



So is the Shogun worth the extra $$ over the Shogun even tho they have the same movt? That is up to you to decide ;)

I like the Summo because of its versatility.

Once i decided, I will share some photos. At the moment, I'm still undecided.



And with that history you just shared, it opened a few other options for me.

I may actually end up buying the same watch stolen from me 20yrs ago.

I will do more digging.

Can order shogun from the usual Japanese online sellers like Higuchi, Chinos and Seiya. Be mindful that the imcoming will kana GST.

Sorry to borrow thread, how abt comparing a sumo with a orient M-force 200m? Price wise both almost on pile....but what's ur views?

my 2 cents worth, both shogun and sumo use the exact same movement, if i had the $$ i will go for the shogun for the titanium case and bracelet which means it will be more comfy compared to the sumo due to it's lighter weight, and of course it will be rarer compared to the sumo.



Someone is selling in pretty new shogun right now on the forums and they are also in stock with the 3 major japanese on line sellers......

if just against the m-force then i will take the sumo, but its down to personal preference. for me i dun really like the dial, but there's a LE STI version of it worth taking a look but its quite hard to find on the market now.. used to have 1 or 2 pc few wks ago at big time..

I have both Sumo and Shogun.



Shogun is super light, classy. You don't feel like you're wearing a watch.



If you can afford, get both!! :)
