I cant even imagine not being without a car , but if i lived in Singapore , i wouldnt own a car due to the insanely expensive price to purchase a car "not to mention fuel prices" :o I personally would use the MRT instead .
I guess the Singapore government has to discourage its citizens from buying a car or the roads would be gridlocked , then again Singapore has one of the the best public transport networks available , who needs a car in SG anyway with such a good public transport set up :)

I noticed plenty of Honda CB400's , they make for good transport . :)

The kup kia ,wave,sparks aka the 125 cc make the best transport, with a 4 litre tank fc of 40km/lit .

But they're just not as much fun as a 400! The IL4 of the CB is great, as is the Duc V-twin. :)

cb400 are workhorse alike to the 1.5l class in cars in sg. good for every occasion, but lacking for every 1 of them in a way, for transport, the 125cc are better in fc, for long distance, the higher capacity offers more comfort, for race and sportier purposes on track, cb400 is also halfway there
i had 2 of them . though i didnt own any of the vtec onwards cb400,from friend's they had better throttle response n of course better spec over the diff , and of cos more accessory to mod with.
but unlike car 1.5l class to 2l, much more maint n running cost, keeping a 400cc to a 600cc or even to a 1000cc is not much diff, tyres maybe 2 -3 blues notes diff, chain and sprockets maybe 1-2 notes diff, inusrance is similar cost based on same age, rd tax less than 1-2 blue note diff. similar stuff for 400cc to 1k or more cc: also 4 spark plus, engine oil 3-3.5lit, air filter price is similar, brake pads also same. most bikers dun stay on a 400cc bike too long due to this and the classification of bike licensee in sg.
a bit loh so, i went from a 150(class 2b) to a 400 (class 2a)to a 600(Class 2) also had a 135 sold off then a 200 while keeping the 600. then got back a 400cc coupled with the 200cc. in the end sold off and had the 1000 which i rode till today.

its not really a good idea to ride for transport , if you dun have least to say "some interest " or passion, the risk on a bike compared to savings of time /convenience is just not worth it, IMHO
IN fact years back , after 1 incident, i totally stop encouraging non bikers ard me and in fact tried to deter ppl who i know to take up motorcycling.

I stopped riding after I had a head on accident. My full face helmet saved my life.
Last time roads are still not so crowded. Now...... hiaz

I've not owned a bike larger than the 400 I have, but I've maybe only 3x in the past 3 years felt that a 400 is not enough power for SG roads. At 50+ bhp, it gives you all the drive you need, a V-twin especially over the IL4. I've looked at moving up every now and then (qlready have Cl2), but just don't see the need.
Of course, think OTR a CB400 is ~$16k new, so there's not too much difference to jump to Class 2, tho that'll mean another 3-6m @ a driving centre with $300-700 spent.
But, the running costs of a bike vs a car are fairly significant. 3/4 less parking fees (if you pay at all) and 1/2 less ERP charges adds up fairly quick. Where I work, monthly car parking (if you get a spot) is
$475 now, whereas bikes are $53 for the month.
Not sure about running costs for a mid-size car, but I'm paying like ~$1.5k a year max for my bike, definitely within my budget; only insurance is a bit ex @ $750 / year.

I can definitely understand this sentiment, however I am not sure I fully agree with the premise. People use motorcycles in Thailand / Cambodia / India / etc as true transport, no matter the danger, because it is cheap. Singapore is relatively the same, just that the number of cars around is higher and drivers are less aware of motorcyclists (which they'd be if they rode themselves). Sure, in SG there's better bus / MRT, but having a bike easily trumps being a sardine in a can. Then again, that's just my opinion, and I am a bit biased on the matter. :P
But yes, riding is more dangerous, just do the best you can to stay safe.

i lost gauge on how much current running for a car cost due to the rocket coe prices already. the current family car was bought years back when coe was in 15-20k range, at that time, ard 1.5k-2k depending on petrol.

its actually more dangerous in these countries, due to the mentality/local laws enforcement
in thai, rider need to wear helmet, some of the most basic helmet looks like a thicker bicycle helmet,and PILLION dun NEED a helmet at all!!
a fren's encounter in phuket, he was driving a local fren's panel van of some sorts, in a corner the van toppled, after he toppled, from incoming oppsite direction, a kup with 2 sisters coming, they got shocked and skidded and in the end it was fatal. the TP there concluded it was the van who hit the gals.
with a barrier in language and corruption, it took him 1 mth then it was settled before they let him come back.
Bcos of education and differences in earning income, in some or a lot of such families, the bike is like the car to them already.
They just cant afford anything more.
i'm having the same mentality, if i cant go out on the bike due to rain, most of the time i'll rather stay home. its maybe mths or even year i last took public transport.
Im glad this hobby/passion has let me enjoy the freedom as well as the convenience of getting ard sg.

Owned b4 a yamaha X1(smallest) to yamaha R1(biggest)...if to say daily use then a cb400 wil b gd but if for play than forget it...i changed sports tyres,ohlins suspension stil when corner is i push the bike down...while my R1 when corner is the other way round...With the crazy price now...i shld b going back to bike in abt 2 yrs x...hopefulli can hav 2...1 RXZ(owned 3 b4) n 1 either a sports bike or sm... :D

No, sorry, I meant 3 times in the last 3 years while riding I thought: "I need more power".
Yes, it's an M400, the engine's like got like a dead zone between 2.5-4k rpm, below 2.5k or anything above 4k it can pull harder than I require, but if I ever find myself in that 2.5-4k range, the power doesn't kick in like I expect.
It is pick-up based, probably in too low / high a gear to get good pickup, when I've switched lanes behind a slower car and looking for that quick burst to go past and get in front.
Your insurance 1st party? Guess they price 400's in the same range as the 600++, I'm not all that young anymore. ;)
I'm actually been looking at the new KTM 390 Duke, and at $12k new the power to weight looks much better than the Monster's, but it's a thumper... not sure how that'll affect the power output. Guess we'll see how that works out, and what COE / insurance is at that time! :)

100% in agreement on all of the above! :) Too bad about those two girls, terrible story from either side. I must say that Singaporean driving / riding training is better than most I've seen, I'd go as far to say it's that even the USA's. Now, whether what's learnt is actually practiced on the road or not... :mrgreen:
The way COE skyrocketed, it was getting to that point... pay $120k+ for a terrible car? even with 10y loans, that's 10k I principle alone a year, at least $15k with interest. And that's a depreciating asset, unlike a home, so you'd then either need a new COE or a new car. :eek: Thank goodness it's coming down, but still. :?

m400 is 1 of the bikes i always wanted but never got down to, probably bcos i need boxes n storage for touring..... the class 2 of it always tempted me......

nope im paying that amt for 2nd party only.
in fact started from 500 plus when the bike was 3 years old. now bike is 2 years from coe due, n insurance gradually increased!!!

it was a bike in its own class within the 400cc sportsbike, often misunderstood as problematic as there was not much ard n parts problem, mostly bcos mech were familiar with it. by now the age made it worst,,,,,
