What's the worst you've done to your watch?
Being a complete noob, I decided to try changing the straps of my good 'ol seiko solar chrono this afternoon. First spring bar came out fine but had a little "accident" with the second one, resulting in a pretty bad scratch on the case!



Well, no one to blame but looking at the bright side, I'll always be able to identify my watch if it ever gets nicked! :lol:



So what's the worst you've done to your watch? unintentionally of course!

I tried my hands at removing the hands on a vintage diver and broke the pinion.



Dismantle a movement but duno how to put back.



Bent a bezel insert and it snapped into half. :grin:

Tired to open one of those homage panerai casebacks by using a caseback opener ball.

Whole display caseback shattered when I applied pressure to it :o

Dropped an expensive vintage Wakmann chronograph on the floor and chronograph function and time keeping went bonkus. Unforgettable experience.

Tried to regulate a 7s26 using a digital watch, screwed up the balance. Movt up the lorry.

Adjust a watch bracelet first time,

Bent every pin while squeezing then back.... :|

Fought with classmate back in sec 4 and in the process my tag heuer braclet gave way and whole watch was flung outta the building from 4th storey. The rest is history and since then watches has never being my interest till lately after I join this forum. :mrgreen:

Fought with classmate back in sec 4 and in the process my tag heuer braclet gave way and whole watch was flung outta the building from 4th storey. The rest is history and since then watches has never being my interest till lately after I join this forum. :mrgreen:

Trying to change the 6497 movement to another case and broke something inside the movement. Have to find one day to dismantle it and learn something from it. :)

I was learning and playing with opening watches case back and do some oiling myself on some of my vintage watches... And remember that day I was on mc.. So took out the oil and oiling needle... Open up one of my Russians and oil..... While dipping at the hair spring... Dunno how I do, the spring came loose and went kaput!



Lesson learnt...don't do any delicate work when you are sick.

I've managed to snap all three (hr, min and sec) hands while using the hands remover. After removing, I expected to see 3 hands drop down fm my hands remover, but instead I got 6 pieces.



Broke the quickset date mechanism while putting in the crown into the skx031



Those two are probably the worst for me.

i know exactly how this feels. Dropped a watch a good 2 meters, (un)luckily it's just a Fossil. had the glass replaced for just Php200 (around SGD6).

one of my 6309 cushion case mod diver ever flew off my wrist and landed on tiles... and surprisingly there was not damage to the case or xtal.. the watch still kept good timing like before.. :o



after that incident, i never wear silicone strap anymore.

too flexible and on certain angle and force, it can pull back on the springbars so it dislodges from the lugs. :?

The worst thing I have done to watches is to neglect them since I don't personally open them up to 'play' like the more pro guys here. :mrgreen:

I thought the reason Seiko didnt use Sapphire was because they weren't able manufacture the sapphire inhouse to the spec that they wanted (particularly for the divers), so they developed instead the Hardlex... i read that in an Ikuo Tokunaga interview somewhere (i need to go find it). :? :?



and he admitted that sapphire is more superior. iirc

Sapphire is brittle, so I guess dropping a watch with sapphire crystal will probably see the same fate ?



Damaged some vintage Russian pieces, nowadays I don't touch movement stuff liao.

In the late 80's while fishing for Snapper in Port Phillip Bay , my Seiko 5 which i admit was many years over due for a service , just stopped working while i was fishing :x . For some crazy reason , i just taken it off my wrist & thrown it into Port Phillip bay as far as i could throw :o

I now wish i didnt throw it into the Bay & just had it serviced instead , anyway thats the worst thing i ever did to one of my watches . :oops:

It's ceramic... I think Araldite is a better choice. :)

Couldn't open a snap-off case back. In my frustration, broke the display back crystal with 2-3 hits from the butt of the knife.

Ceramic is scratch proof but can break on impact. Good and bad.

I subject my watches to being dunk numerous times into water just to take photos of them (although 2 of them are not really dive watches). :D
