Grand Seiko or DateJust

Grand Seiko or DateJust
[color=#00BF40]Hello all. I hope this is the correct forum to think aloud.

I've been thinking for some time and I still cannot decide if I should get the Grand Seiko SBGR053 or the Rolex DateJust.

Price-wise, the Grand Seiko is cheaper but its handbuilt and more exclusive.

Rolex, is, well just Rolex.

Not sure how much discount is avaliable from the shop at ION or VivoCity. It might work out cheaper to buy from Japan and then pay the 7% GST to the postman.

I've asked a few shops and most say about 10 - 15% discount for the Rolex.

Both are about the same size, with the bracelet. Both will have the same function for me as daily wear. I am planning for this to be a keeper, so I am not too concerned about resale. In terms of service, does the Grand Seiko have to go back to Japan, or can K2 do the job, equally or if not better? I believe he can service Rolex as well?

Any views would be most welcome.

Thanks & have a great week ahead.

Re: Grand Seiko or DateJust
Personally speaking the Grand Seiko would be my first choice , not that the Rolex isnt a great piece . Only i have great appreciation for the way Grand Seiko are hand assembled & the care & quality that goes into every GS , it seems a lot of ppl in Singapore own Rolex these days , thats my opinion last i visted Singapore anyway . But i rarely see a person wearing a Grand Seiko , in my opinion Grand Seiko is more exclusive than a Rolex . You buy a GS for yourself & not a care for what others think . But if you want to scream out look @ me & have a watch to say i am a Success or for Poser status , then go Rolex :) " My 2 cents" .

I reckon you might be able to get higher discount for regular date just. Maybe around 18%? Cos 15% is possible for explorer 2 now. Usually date just discounts should be higher than sport models.

Re: Grand Seiko or DateJust
having both GS diver and subC, GS would be the most beloved in terms of.... well, every single thing of GS !
Re: Grand Seiko or DateJust
I would go for a GRAND Seiko.

ROLEX Is nice and Astro2212 has a point about resale.

If we are not concern with resale, the grand Seiko it's the way to go.

If u are pervert like me..... view a GS... through a loupe... you will see it is probably better than a Patek, AP.....

i think the most realistic question to ask yourself is..

are you ready to spend this amount for a Seiko?
Re: Grand Seiko or DateJust

...are you ready to spend this amount for a Seiko?

CEO's question is SHORT, STRAIGHT and SHARP!!!

No...no... no joke. Really serious question! It's a matter of how one see a timepiece as. A treasure? Or an asset of investment? Or just something in life that one use, keep, then passes on to another person, be them their juniors, kins or even friends!

True. Some view watches as fashion accessories, some as a instrument to tell time, some investment, some as an art form....

Other collectors keep stamps....even more valuable...then again, what are you looking for?

Buy what your heart feels....Dun let us tell you what you should or should not get.
Re: Grand Seiko or DateJust
I would take the GS over the datejust

If resale is a concern, while Rolex are highly liquid, the DJ doesnt do very well compared to the sport models in the preown market.

From my casual observations, while the resale for GS isnt good nor is it that liquid, I noticed GS are still sold pretty quickly online when a used piece is put up for sale.
Re: Grand Seiko or DateJust
As for as possible, I buy watches that I can easily sell and not lose my shirt. At this moment, Rolex is an easier sell than GS. What do you think?

In Australia GS isnt even on the radar so to speak , we only know of Rolex ,Omega , Swiss watches etc "whats a GS" most Aussie's would say . But am a Aussie guy & love GS & couldnt care less for resale , if you are worried about resale your not ready & should keep your $$$ . But every used GS sold in Aust , is sold quick & for a high price & not often come on the market & they are snapped up fast . .

I love that feeling when I go into a room full of people, be it at a meeting, conference or exhibition and I know I'm probably the only guy wearing an mm300 or a KS.

(But same can be said if I was wearing a Mickey Mouse watch )

Oh well... Go figure
Re: Grand Seiko or DateJust
Just in case any of the brudders here want to get GS in HK... check it out there... according to this post...

no takers yet...
Re: Grand Seiko or DateJust
i once pondered getting a GS, but my concerns are about getting a WATCH, something unique, not readily seen, heard or understood and definitely not about liquidating...after advice from bros here and some research, i took the plunge and got the GS SBGR061...

i felt in love with it immediately when i laid my eyes and hands on it, the quality is truly amazing and have it hug my wrist...the best feeling i have wearing a watch...my precious which i only bring out when i know that it won't be hurt...

i overheard a friend recently asking another which rolex to buy, so that it can be flipped later...if he asked me, i would just tell him to keep his money in the bank, its the most fluid there...

like all the bros advice here, just ask yourself what is the meaning of buying a high-end watch to you...then maybe it'll be easier to decide, as it'll be your money and its going to be on your wrist...
Re: Grand Seiko or DateJust
[color=#00BF40]Appreciate all the views, thanks.

If/ when I buy, it will be a keeper so I'm not looking at resale value.

I understand that K2 can service the GS & the Rolex, so that's good to know.

If I go for the GS, I'm still thinking if I should get it from the physical store here or via the usual Japan stores online. The advantage with going to a store here is that I can get the exact piece that I view/ hold & if there are any problems, I can go straight back.

Online from Japan will probably be cheaper, including the GST which is quite likely. Will the Warranty be valid here if I get it online from Japan?

Thanks.

;)
Re: Grand Seiko or DateJust
you can always go to Thong Sia or Seiko Vivo City to have a feel of it if they have the piece, there's no obligation to buy...

from what i know, Seiko can identify the watch maker that make the particular GS by its serial no. and if you bring it to Thong Sia, they will send it back to Japan, to the watch maker of that particular watch to service or repair it. it will cost a bit more and takes longer, but for a GS, I think its worth it. so make sure it have a international warantee if you getting overseas.

i was told this kind of service is only available to high-end watches in the likes of AP, Lange...etc.

anyway, for the quality of GS, i reckon that minimal servicing and repair is required...

the most typical thing that some of us here do is to try the watches in retail shop first. then get them from online jap stores like seiya japan/higuchi

if im not wrong, yes its international warranty.if not send them a email and i'm sure they will be glad to help

Re: Grand Seiko or DateJust
Hi greencat,

Personally I go for the GS, some watch blog says the GS is the "Lexus of Japan Watches". Even the Datejust looks tempting and glamourous, however, its just like parking a Lexus in between Mercedes/BMW. End state, follow your gut feeling.
