Can a quartz swing like a mechanical?

My gosh! I am dumbfounded, I believe I have seen a battery-quartz clock that swings smoothly, without the per second tick-tock.



Can someone verify whether this is possible? If so why aren't the quartz watches made like this?

My Seiko wall clock , which i purchased from Mr Goh @ K2 has a silent sweep & glides like a spring drive Seiko ;)

Technically the Grand Seiko Spring Drive has a quartz and has a smoother sweep than other mechanicals (mechanicals dont actually sweep iirc, they tick at 8 times per second for 28,800bph watches) :D



If we are talking about electronic watches in general, the Omega F300hz movement also sweeps. Its a tuning fork rather thn quartz however.

Technically, it's just a fine line between what is considered a sweeping hand and those high-bph movements. It's all about what the human eye (and then the brain) can process. Normal mechanicals go up to 10 beats per second, which if you pay attention for you can just barely make out.



That starts to blur once you get over the ~12-ish beat per second mark. The Precisionists also have ticks, they're just so frequent that the human eye can't detect it; something like 16 per second or so. There are some mechanicals which do 20 bps, and if you think stopwatches, some which do 100 bps! The Accutron also had vibrations per second, over 300 iirc.



The Spring Drive, however, is not a 'ticking' movement, because it's regulator is a braking mechanism which keeps proper time. So, if you really want a true sweeping hand, gotta go SD! ;) :lol:

I don't think those clocks, "swings". SWEEPs is the better and exact term to describe.

Would U want to see quartz watches that SWEEPs? I'm afraid there's such model in the market, but not price friendly.

Would U want to see quartz watches that ROCKs? Like 21.6K BPH mechanicals? Try getting those budget friendly chronos from SEIKO with 7T9x or V17x movements and activate the chrono hand, IT ROCKS! :mrgreen: :mrgreen: :mrgreen:
