How Many ? Is Too Many ?
I have been fortunate to have owned several nice Seiko's & various other brands of watches throughout my life , but only generally have 2 watches @ any given time e.g #1 daily beater & #2 a watch for going out / special occassions etc .

I never really wanted to own more @ any one moment , less is more attitude . Some folks think similar as i do & yet other folks just cant have enough watches .

Theres no right or wrong , just whats your opinion ? How many watches , is too many :?:

A really controversial topic.



I'm not sure of what yardstick to use too, just kept it within my watchbox capacity (16 pieces). Of which, 8-diver (dedicated half since i'm more inclined to diver), 3-vintage (pass down from grandpa, constant in the collection), 4-dress/chrono, 1-plastic digital.



Can't really measure based on needs IMO, since almost everyone i already carrying a HP nowadays.

Frankly, I'm clueless bro.. I collect watches I like.. Some are vintages and some r newer models. IMO there is no answer to your question and it depends on individual. Well.. Hahhaha to some (of coz including me).. It is never enough.. U will be tempted whenever u see one that struck your heart.



But an advice.. Never buy on impulse... :lol:

I think it depends on the attitude we choose to take towards watches.



Some buy to wear, some just want to display as conspicuously as possible consumption, some to collect, some just poisoned by forums. And these attitudes (plus personal finance) drive the ownership and flip rates.

I do believe that people are drawn by needs and wants. Whether one can truly streamline, which of each falls under, is entirely up to their intentions and purposes. Just my humble take on this.

Many people don't even need watches.


Aint that the truth , with smart phones etc . The means of telling the time is in front of you , without the need of a wrist watch these days .

It amazing how watch companies can market their products so well , that otherwise smart high end business men will gladly part with their big $$ in the tens of thousands to buy a wrist watch in todays world , when one only needs to look @ their smart phone to get the time .

I personally love watches & can totally understand why a person will part with their big $$ to buy a wrist watch they dont actually need , its a want thing . :lol:

This about sums it up. We don't need a watch, we want it. Hence, if we need cash, we sell watch. The sad thing is usually we 大出血 if we sell for quick cash.

15 for me is the optimum number having scaled down from 29. I've 14 now and looking to buy a RG dress watch. I like variety. I try to wear all of them in rotation for the ones i own now. Also, having spent quite a fair bit on this hobby, i think it's time to behave a bit rationally and control the spending.

i think this is very much lifestyle dependent. As for me, i don't think 2 watches is possible to complement my lifestyle. Like u mentioned, one for daily wear, and one for special occasions. But my daily routine can varies from attending conference/meeting to working on site and also considering other activities like sports, traveling and etc... It may be because i'm fussy about what i wear on my wrist, hence, 2 watches imo is insufficient.

As a watch obsessed idiot - i've always stuck to the rules of needing a minimum 4 watches and they would fit into one of these description:

1. dress watch with leather strap (size 36-38mm)

2. a watch on bracelet (most likely a diver)

3. all round beater (a gshock usually)

4. a GMT watch





However, most people only need one watch.

I cant speak for others, but for me, a phone is not reliable enough to reliable to replace my watch. Why?

- phone needs to be charged every couple of days (or even each evening, depending on the usage)

- its not very waterproof

- higher probability to hang and stall.

- for my work, some areas i enter, requires me to surrender all electronic devices.

- my son hijacks it on occasions :lol:

Can there really be too many for a watch freak? And as watch freaks, which must in this forum are, I reckon we need some kinda cooling measures in our annual fiscal budget to plug this habit.

There's no limit in number when it comes to hobby.



For example, in some countries, where cars are much cheaper than in Singapore, we'll often see some individuals owns more than just one car for the whole family need. Hence, it'll not be surprising to see besides family ride, there will be other genre of cars in their garage. Probably a muscle car, as well as race car, or even rugged terrain use, outdoor type pickup trucks or 4x4s. Should there be a limit?



To some women, just a few sets of dresses are not enough. Hence, there'll be a big number of women whose wardrobe size gets much bigger than the men. So as their hand bags, compare to just 1 or 2 wallets for men. Shouldn't there be a limit?



Onto the watches. Compare to womens' bags, dresses, as well as cars... Watches could be much cheaper to acquire and own. It all depends on how much a collector willing to spend for that piece. There're some collector's who may be a fanatic for a certain marque, irregardless of what content in a watch may be. There're some collectors who focus may not be on some particular marques, but on the looks. There're some just on the movements. Besides, compare to bags, dresses as well as cars... due to different designs, different movements as well as different price, watches are much more fun than the others.



Cars in Singapore depriciates fast, and not easy to maintain. More expensive to own.

Dresses will often die along with the trend of a certain period.

Bags? Easy to buy, not easy to maintain. Value depriciates according to how the previous owner may put in effort to maintain. However, in humid Singapore... not easy...

This is one question where there is no right or wrong answer. A big part of the pleasure of our hobby/passion is the joy of handling,looking and wearing time pieces. Of course we ogle the watch at the shope counter but nothing beats the experience of finally getting it in your hands for yourself and walking around with it.



I know collectors who are happy with a selected well controlled pieces numbering in the teens and also collectors who keep on buying and expanding. Who is to say which is the better collector?

Important thing is to be happy and content with the hobby.

I do have 3 watches and rotating them daily (recently added Seiko OM). Hope they all get the wrist time as much as I enjoy them... :P

Honestly, i do not know what has gotten into me.



I have been a fan of Seiko since i was a kid, but watches though being very nice to have, i never had the urge to want to buy them for collection other than for watches to tell me time. I owned 2 Seikos and Longines watch before my addiction.



In the last two months, i chance upon an Ad selling a Seiko Vintage on a Motorcycling Forum (yes.. i am a motorcycle fan!!) and from there i kept on reading and reading about the Seikos.



I learned a lot more about the Seiko Watch and its heritage and got intrigued with it. I am now Hooked!! What got to me is the challenge to get the correct attributes with these vintages, the correct strap it used to come in when it was first sold. The Dial, Bezel, Crown, Case, Bezel Inserts, the ageing on the hands....etc etc.....



In the last two months, i Hooted (hope i got the terminology correct!!) 9 watches, some vintages or so i like to think them to be.



I may have made mistakes with my selections but i just love what i bought. Someone would probably have to sit me down to help me appreciate the finer points when picking out Vintages.... the newer models i bought them not knowing their true market prices. I just bought what i liked!!



I think i am in trouble if this goes on. I am certain this bug may not leave me anytime soon. Its Seikos now.... what if it develops into Swiss Vintages????



I am glad i am in good company here in this forum.... at least we can have our own self help group!!!



I just learnt also that a long lost friend from my Primary/ Secondary School days is also here on this very Forum!! I never knew he is an avid Seiko collector too!!!

Welcome to Seiko vintage watch addiction , many members here not only collect Seiko's but many fine Swiss , German , Russian watches also .

Thanks Miker. They are not for wearing, the number of wrist I have doesn't matter. As I would humbly suggest again, it all depends on the attitudes we take towards watches. I collect Chinese calligraphy too, and in many ways on many levels I take the same attitude towards watches.

I used to have about 10 watches at one point with watches from various makers and time periods and it became a hassle as many were autos with a date function. Lack of wrist time meant that I had to very often adjust the date and wind many of them. I realise I was hording rather than collecting as I was buying on the whim and jumping on every "good deal" or decent looking watch.



I think I have a better picture of what watches I want now and my collection has become more focused lately. I am down to 3 at the moment, I could see adding a few more pieces but I think Im pretty happy with what I have at the moment.

I share the same thoughts as you exactly , i flipped or gifted all my excess Seiko's & now have 2 . I honestly prefer my Quartz Seiko over my Auto Ananta in many ways , no winding , spot on accurate , no day / date adjusting etc . :)

My personal exprience & i speak for myself only , while i was last visting Singapore between October to late December 2012 . I found myself @ times without having many of the outdoor adventures & things to do , as i do have access to in Australia & the weather in SG is so damn hot & humid all the time it prompted me to stay close to a Air Conditioner e.g shopping malls etc when i went out .

So i found myself checking out retail watch stores all over SG & buying Seiko's as gifts etc , so i realized that if i was a PR in SG , i reackon my watch collecting would be higher than it is now . So keep up the collecting guys , theres worse hobbies to spend your hard earn $$$ on . :)

Maybe beyond a basic number it is already what you want and not what you need. If we think about this question in terms of how you use your watches would there be a more "rationale" number.



For me the quest started with having a 1. g-shock I thought can suite all purposes. Then it died. I thought just change battery but no it really just died (after a drop from chest height onto the running track. Yes, g-shock can die too!!!



Then I got a 2. citizen solar (no need to change battery as I got fed-up changing battery for my many other quartz) perpetual calendar, it is more of a dress watch so I can wear it to work and never lose time and day/date (yes, sometimes I lost time of day and date!!).



Then I thought I need something for sports, world-time (sometimes go india/pakistan those out by half hour cities) and I always got lost overseas. So I got a protrek. A compass for navigation, an altimeter for hiking, thermometer for objectively telling how hot it really is (these few days zhua leh!!- 30.2deg) and a barometer to anticipate the rain. And it is on titanium, solar and atomic, how accurate else can it be?!-calibrate the rest to this guy =)



Since I got casio, citizen then the next upgrade should be....SEIKO. As I am getting old, eyes not so good, read so much about mechanical, and a bezel for easy reference to another time zone(albeit still can't those indian and pakistan cities) and also can sport, can dress, naturally it is a.....seiko diver.



Unlike the purist who may just get watches for the sake of pure love, I 'try' to justify with the function. And since I am bad at calculation, maybe the next one should be one with slide rule. =) Like that is it not going to end ya? But for now the quest stops (temporarily) at 3. =)





ps: for strap-stainless steel is versatile, rubber is comfortable but "rough, sweaty" guy can't do the "yiu siu" leather.
