Argon is an inert gas and is commonly used as a purge (or blanketing) gas to remove air from an enclosed space to minimize effects of moisture or oxygen.



In the case of watches, traces of moisture overtime will cause corrosion. So with the removal of air the corrosion effects is minimized.



Other common purge gasses would be nitrogen (not so safe) or helium (more expensive than argon).

Nitrogen is used in wine not solely for the purpose of purging, i think (correct me if i am wrong) nitrogen is also plays an important role in the wine making process (from the soil to the harvesting, etc). So i assume by using nitrogen it also preserves the 'taste' of the wine better.



As for the Argon escaping... i also wondered about that. I'm not a Sinn expert, so I'll let the other bros answer this. :lol: :lol:

I'm pretty certain nitrogen is not used in the vineyard, as in the soil or harvesting.. Especially harvesting. Only hands and baskets (if traditional) or tractors are used. The only process I can think of when nitrogen is introduced in wine making is in the fermenting tanks. The only thing I can think of that is added in the wine making process is usually yeast and sulfites (preservative 220).



As a wine preserver, some wine shops sell nitrogen in cans. It's pumped into the empty space in a wine bottle to preserve wine by preventing oxidization.

You are right about nitrogen preventing oxidation, which is critical to the wine taste and preservation.

i only assume the principle of preventing oxidation in wine could be translated and used in the bottling, topping, storage, transporting and ofcourse in the fermentation tanks.



Nitrogen content is naturally found everywhere (soil, leaves, chlorophyll, enzymes), and maybe it is not used explicitly but it has a significant role in how the grapes grow, taste and look (colour)

this is something most wouldnt do...magnetic field given out by such devices may affect the watch.
