Should we be supporting homages?

Just wanted to find out what people here think of them? Are you against the idea, don't mind, for? Should there be more or less? Which iconic models would you like to see if it already isn't out?



The reason I started this is that I see a lot of homages or maybe they always were around just that I was not so clear about it. And the interesting part is that a lot tend to be to the Rolex submariner or DSSD (or Sea dweller). Definitely tempting to buy them sometimes but of course they never fill the void.(if that's what one wants) and flipping locally takes a much bigger hit(IMO) not that one doesn't take a hit in the international market.



Personally, I think they should be done with some variation to the original as an option. Example, 2 models, one inline with the original and the other with a difference. (different seconds hands, tips, bezel style, color etc...) :D

I'm not sure, is rolex the first brand which came out with the sub style case or was there other brands before rolex?



Due to the noctorious branding, people tends to think 'Oh, it's another Rolex Sub homage' instead of 'Hey, it's Brand X homage(assuming IF Brand X does produce this type of case/dial/merc hands etc)



End of the day, I might get one but it also goes out pretty fast ;) :lol:

It's a fine line. I think for me, it's not about supporting that brand but rather the design.



Homage pieces never last long in my collection too, flipped ocean7 homage of the 1200 ploprof, Helson homage of 600 ploprof.

design is being copy everywhere, homages is fine for me, as long is not fake, as in brand name is there but its not authentic watch.



one thing about homages usually it wont last long, so dun bother to buy unless really love the look :)

I have no problem with homages... In fact some are quite nice and at a fraction of the price of the real deal... Why not?

True, with its marketing prowess, Rolex has made it seem like every other watch is a sub homage... lol...



For all who have it and flipped it, why did you flip it? Not authentic? DId not look right ultimately? Did you then go and get the real thing?

Personally don't mind as i purchased it myself be it for the look of the watch(major factor) or spend a faction of the actual watch to test it out myself.



I believe these new watch makers inorder to start-up they tend to produce watches that people will take 2nd look (likable shape, size).

No sale no further R&D.



Recently bought 2 more homage... helson skindiver & mkii sea fighter.. :) yet to flip any watches but soon will when i get over this waste $ learning process...



Buying big names chances it will involved XX,XXX or X,XXX amount of cash, will you keep it for offsprings or flip when get tired of it. But if $ not issue that is no brainer.. :)

though lately a lot of homage brands are coming out like kemmner, parnis that seem quite popular

I don't mind the existence of homages, and it doesn't hurt my sensibilities if people own and enjoy collecting them.



To me it's like prostitution. Just because it is legal doesn't mean it is ethical in everyone and anyone's eyes.

I am not into homages but then again its perfectly fine as all types of collectors exists and hence all kinds of watch makers strive..



got to respect other watch and its beauty of it and just a mindset issue but also if its a 1:1 near 90% hommage,there sure be ppl passing negative remarks about it,admist the supporters..



I am not a supporter so would not reallt be bother by it..



though for certain rarer super expensive vintage, remakes of hommages are welcome like those blancpain divers..

I think the thin line between a homage and an imitation copy is the intention for the homage to copy the real deal.



A good example to illustrate this would be Marina Militare's and Panerai's.



Many of the MMs don't try to be a Panerai. For one, you won't be able to find "Panerai" printed anywhere on the dial, unlike original PAMs.



So for me, MMs are more of homages instead of imitation copies of Panerai.

The over hyped ROLEX SUB was a homage to BLANCPAIN diver in the 50s. Dot indices, rotating bezel... it's just the ROLEX's design gets finer and finer over years of evolution... hence, today's iconic design.

but well, whats was the true purpose of homage? it's to simply pay respect to the original works. however, people abuse it.

for example, china have so many homage marina militare that you can almost find it at every corner in Shenzhen? it have slowly turned into a money making opportunity instead..? brands like alpha, parnis or even steinhart.. where are their creativeness?



sometimes when you wear homage.. non WIS will like.. is that a fake? no doubt there are some really nice homage around :P



but again, i have no offense of homage. and yes, i always have this statement in mind. buy new buy old, but always buy 'you' :mrgreen:

I have owned several homage watches in the past and this is my take on it :

I guess there are two kinds of homage makers, those that use well constructed and those obviously out for a quick buck to capitalize on tried and proven designs.



The first group of homage makers make good watches for the money specification wise, many of which come with comparable specs to the watch they "pay hommage" to.

Water resistance/Sapphire crystal/Workhorse (often 2824-2)/Ceramic Bezel/316L steel all for $500 or so. Most of these brands also offer slightly different appearance or case size from the original.

I had a rather awkward experience when someone approached me about my Ocean vintage GMT and asking if it was a 1655 explorer but im no longer buying these purely because they no longer fit in my collection criteria.



The second group however are the ones that bother me, these makers capitalize on the design of many well know companies and often make casing that are very very close to the original (some so close that all that separates them is the words on the dial). These watches often also come with less desirable specifications (Sub/Planet Ocean homages with questionable water resistance ratings, non functioning chronographs, faux PAM crown guards (iirc these infringe copyright since Panerai patented the crown guards but I shall not discuss that), "Chronometer" Dial when watches clearly arent :lol: )

What disturbs me even more about the second group is that these watches are often manufactured alongside replicas and rebranded with mushroom brands to avoid legal disputes and sell them on places like ebay.





I have no qualms about people owning either though, different folks different strokes.
