Starting a G-Shock Collection... Slippery Slope?
A friend likened starting a G-Shock collection to a slippery slope, because while the prices are relatively affordable, it's easy to get, well, carried away.



Having collected only Swiss or Japanese automatics thus far, I recently started looking at G-Shocks (having not worn one since I was in the Army more than 15 years ago) and have decided that Frogmans and the square-faced ones (5600 series etc) were the most appealing to me.



Here are my acquisitions thus far (for the past month and a half). I may need to slow down. :P

It can be very addictive indeed. Watches are that way like any hobby. Always easy to get carried away. In SG, not so easy to get carried away IMO since many limited editions don't make it to our shores... :cry:

Ah, but when one gets the chance to visit the Land of the Rising Sun, it can get very "ugly" for the wallet indeed.



Thank goodness I'm not thick-skinned enough to keep asking my friends in Tokyo to buy stuff back. :P

I think ok lah, quite fun and satisfying to collect. Only thing is to find some way to discipline your collection, thematically or otherwise.



Storage and the periodic need for sunning the solar models is something to take into account...

How do you keep the strap from 'melting' or turning sticky in the long run? This is a common problem I hear but can't be too dry either if not the resin will crack very fast right? Plus Sg is too humid anyway. Anyone have ideas?

The older resin seems to crack regardless of usage or storage conditions. The newer ones (post 2000 in my experience) seem to stay supple. When the collection gets large, maintaining spares is not practical also.



So I just let things take their natural course, and not get too hung up and petty.

I used to collect designer toys, the kind made from vinyl. And that "melting" and "turning sticky" issue has been discussed at length on the toy forums with no solution. Some people recommend putting talcum powder and others recommend keeping the object out of the light and in their boxes.



However ONE thread a long time ago seemed to make sense and may shed some light on our strap issue. One poster on one of the toy forums claimed to work for a plastics moulding plant and he explained it thus:



A chemical called a platiciser is added to the resin to make it supple. it's what makes a plastic a plastic, if you know what I mean. Over time, this plasticiser will degrade and outgas from the plastic/vinyl (ypu'd recognise it as the smell of fresh plastic), leaving the surface that's exposed to air a sticky mess. This apparently is part of the natural degradation of that kind of plastic and there's nothing that can be done to prevent it. Though heat will accelerate the chemical process (like we learned in primary school), it's pretty much unstoppable.



I may not have remembered all the term accurately and I daresay that I'm paraphrasing liberally. But the gist of it is up there. Sigh... got several 400% Be@rbricks from the early days of vinyl that are stickily standing in my display case at home. Can't sell them coz no one will buy a sticky Be@r. :p

I could probably expand the taste, but that'd be really bad for the wallet I reckon. :)



I'm not into funky colourful mashups or complicated faces, so I'm safe from alot of the other models.

Same sentiment, so i only like 5600 and Frogman. If not my wallet is going to be very sad.
