Seiko JDM , Is It Really "Made In Japan" ?

I own a new JDM , which i recently purchased . It says on the rear case "made in Japan" , does this really mean 100% made in Japan ? Or only partly made in Japan ?

It has been suggested by some ppl they are cased in china ? I'd be rather unhappy to think it was cased in China , considering it is marked made in Japan . I purchased my new JDM , due to the fact i was told its a higher quality made in Japan Seiko watch .

Cased/Assembled in Japan has the highest possibility.

You can see the word China, possibly when you dismantle the watch apart... "case made in china" or something like that...

From what i understand 99% of parts / components are actually made in Japan + the watch is also assembled in Japan .

When compared to my Seiko Kinetic Divers 200m , when i purchased it new stated on back with a peel off sticker over the blue case sticker "cased in China" , leaving me no doubt of orgin & country of manufacture / assembly .

Unfortunately such rule is very slacking.



For example, take a look at some German labels.

LACO- you may see the words "Made in Germany" printed on some of their dials right? In a piece of their watch, what's the largest percentage of cost on making that piece? Casing? Movement? Straps? Or the cost of design? Assembly by the watchmakers they employed?

Junkers and Zepplin- 2 of another German brands that have the words "Made In Germany" printed on their dials as well. However, is there anything really German made in their watches? Perhaps the straps, or casings that are finished in Germany with raw casings imported from else where. How about the movements? German? Noooo... their movements are either SWISS Quartz or Mechanicals, from RONDA and latter from ETA, as well as from Japan and RUSSIA for their hand winds. So, how German is Junkers and Zepplin...besides the name?



How about those labels with SWISS MADE printed on the dials? Are they really SWISS made?

The SWISS Watch making federation states that, 51% of a SWISS watch if made with SWISS cost, they're qualified to use the words SWISS MADE on the dials on the watches which may not be SWISS owned. Is there any loop hole here? There is... Let's say... if a movement maker sets up a plant in China or Indonesia or India, the movements made by these plants are considered as SWISS MADE, because of the SWISS employees from SWITZERLAND are sent over to the other part of the world to do technical fine tunes, quality controls and managing the manufacturing process. Then sent back to Switzerland such that these movements can be used on SWISS watches. So how does a SWISS watch with SWISS movements made else where fitted into a watch qualifies as a SWISS watch? This is where Manpower comes in...



Okay... now onto Japanese watches. Basically just like the 2 above. All their parts needs not to be Made/Assembled in Japan. It's the part where all the components are Assembled in Japan, where the movement can be Thai made, casings can be China made, straps can be eastern european or India made, then all are assembled finally in Japan plant with Japanese overseeing the assembly process and exercising quality controls.



After all described above... where do you think your watch is made?

If it's a Seiko, it doesn't matter where it's made. I have a "landmonster" I had bought from a bro here that was "made in Malaysia" for the American market. But it also one of my favourite watches and it beats strong and true.



What matters is where the watches end up. Not abused, but used and appreciated.

I was about to post and ask if there is any difference between a SBDC001 and a SBDC001J (Made in Japan), but i guess my question doesn't matter anymore. Thanks Ed for the enlightening post. Like it or not, such is the truth of globalization. :|
