Automatic Watch Servicing , Is It really Needed ??

Automatic Watch Servicing , Is It really Needed ??
The question i will put forward , is a Automatic Seiko watch be it a Seiko 5 , Grand Seiko High Beat 3600 , SARB JDM , Ananta etc required to be serviced religiously every 3 to 5 yrs ?

Some members have never serviced their Automatic Seiko's with no adverse affects , so any input of your own personal exprience would be helpfull .

With high servicing costs , how far can you stretch service intervals or do you dont bother tills its broke .
Re: Automatic Watch Servicing , Is It really Needed ??
Short Answer... NO.

Yes when...

1. after some number of years of usage, for example, if you had been wearing a piece since the first day you had acquired as an daily beater, when power reserves falls by more than 40%, it's time then to visit the doctor.

2. if it ain't break, don't let the watchmakers break... it open.

3. japanese movements are generally cheaper to service, on general movement models. Anything more higher end, more complex it is the architecture. More expensive as well for the parts. So as the servicing fee if no parts necessary to be changed. So, is it feasible to do periodic service?
Re: Automatic Watch Servicing , Is It really Needed ??
This is an interesting conversation to have.. especially when MM300 comes in. Had a chat with a bro here in lengths about the need and where to service the MM300...

That piece is not cheap if you go via the TS route as they send it back to Japan...

But frankly servicing is part and parcel.. not all movt are equal work horses and some probably went through more wear and tear.
Re: Automatic Watch Servicing , Is It really Needed ??
Its obvious the Seiko watch retailer has a vested interest to keep you coming back for regular serving , every 2 yrs to 3 yrs . if i dont use my higher end Automatic Seiko watches daily & let them sleep most of their service life , servicing once every 10 yrs would be more realistic "imo" . Lubes am told can last without clogging up or having a negative affect to the watch for many yrs , for instance the many Automatic watches not running in retail stores with many of them sitting there for years .
Re: Automatic Watch Servicing , Is It really Needed ??
Well I wouldn't say for years as most of them are on consignment basis.

If its passed too long of a shelve life, they will most probably end up in a fire sale or a recall if requires.

:)

My exprience here in Singapore , i noticed several Seiko retailers around the Lucky Plaza region "for example" . That have older new Seiko Auotmatic models that have been long discontinued covered in dust , sitting in showcases not running "sleeping" waiting to be sold as new watches .
Re: Automatic Watch Servicing , Is It really Needed ??
IMHO, theres basically 2 schools of thoughs, ie, periodic maintenance so as to prolong the conditions + parts of the watch; or ad-hoc breakdown repairs.

We must also consider factors such as parts availability, value of watch, labour costs incurred, before we decide whether to service a particular watch.

Eg, if ive a watch which is a daily beater of low price range + parts r easily avail + service costs r cheap, i wldnt mind wait till it breaks dwn then i send for servicing.

On the contrary, if the watch has high value + parts r not available easily n expensive + servicing costs r expensive, i may then consider to send it for periodic maintenance.

Just my views

As simple as that "hey" ;)
Re: Automatic Watch Servicing , Is It really Needed ??
Just a mention , i e'mailed Seiko Australia & asked them if they service Ananta & JDM Seiko's . Seiko Aust , promptly replied to my enquiry . They did advise these models will be sent to Japan for servicing , if or when needed "also recommended they be serviced every 2 to 3 yrs" .

Singapore Seiko has a similar view , but did say 6R15 Caliber most likely can be serviced in Singapore service centre .

yup...was at K2 yesterday and asked Mr Goh about servicing for my 6 yr old Bell & Ross...and he said if it still keeps time without significant gains/loss no need servicing...jus shake it bit every now and then to ensure that it is still moving...
Re: Automatic Watch Servicing , Is It really Needed ??
I dunno but I like the example my friend made. He asked if we service our bites and cars regularly despite the usage?
Re: Automatic Watch Servicing , Is It really Needed ??
I reckon there isn't any right or wrong answer to this question but a matter of opinion.
Re: Automatic Watch Servicing , Is It really Needed ??
I agree with the saying "If it aint broke , Dont fix it" . But being mechanically minded , logic also tells me that servicing a high performance engine "Regardless it being a car , motorcycle or Seiko" it will run trouble free & give a longer service life .

It really comes down to personal choice & attitudes towards maintaining a product , if its a $150.00 Seiko 5 then maybe run it till its dead . If its a Seiko Ananta , GS , JDM , Prospex , then it be worth servicing every few years . :)
