Pelican Watch Case - Cutting the Pick and Pluck Foam
A few of us bought the Pelican 1470 Case from Quasimodo, I am one of them.



I'm so anxious to start but also holding back on the size and layout of the slots to be cut out.





First block out, took Ivan's advise on 4x7. The whole idea is not to get the exact size but something smaller so the sponge can grip on the object tightly, rather than a loose fit.



You could probably be wondering what's 4x7, cm ? inches ? It's actually the number of blocks in the Pick and Pluck Foam.





As you can see, the foam is already pre-cut, leaving small mini joints holding them together, so you can customise the size and shape of the slots. Slots for watches is easy, just a rectangle.



I didn't really use the knife for every cut, just get in to cut the first few joints, get the 4x7 shape out and use my fingers to slowly tear the remaining joints apart.





Seiko 6309 just fit in nicely.





The bigger Halios Puck will have the crown protruding out but it's ok, there's allowance in between the slots.

Wah tiring man !!!



Anyway I did some "designing" on excel to find the most optimised design while fully utilising the real estate and I came out with a combination of 4x7 and 4x6 slots with a capacity of 20 watches :lol:



When I was stuffing the watch in, I realised the cut out sponge is too "fat" for the slot especially it's compressed with the watch strap, so I decided to tear 1x7 and 1x6 from the blocks, so it fits into the slots with the right tightness.



So viola.







The 4x6 slots can hold either small watches or watches with thinner straps.

Now to fill it with watches.





Tried to group them divers, modern at the left, Seiko vintage in the middle and other vintage divers on the right..



I still have 2 pieces hanging around... shut down the cover, shake it around, everything is all good.



I might want to get something to protect the acrylic crystals and bezels as the sponge might scratch them up ? Who knows.



Now when's that gathering coming :lol:

Narrowest gap is 2 blocks, almost 2cm, the space is quite ok but I don't have very big watches, biggest being the puck, and that 4x7 with 2 blocks gap around is more than enough.

i am wondering will it affect the watches if the box is accidentally dropped onto the floor,hmmm



the torture test products are mainly electronic products hence it's not as fragile as watches



right? :lol:

drop from human height shld be okie.



a certain printer making mnc used to stored "calibrated" in lab to nearest mm ink cartridges for precise calibration and machine teaching.



The American counterpart says the box is able to take shocks and certain reasonable drops.



Btw, the off the production line randomly chosen cartridges after sending to lab cost like a sinn u1. and they stored 3-6 of them inside a box. so i think they will take note drops are likley thus they chose pelican as well.

Interesting.. I didn't really read much into Pelican cases, all I know is that they are very durable and strong to protect the contents within.. :lol:

Late in the game....







Good custom inserts for the 1470 case.
