Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case

Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case
I'm gauging interest among members for a possible MO for the Pelican 1470 for use as a watch case. The finished foam insert with the case should look like this:

The benefits and methods have been discussed at length on Worn and Wound:

http://wornandwound.com/2012/03/19/diy-pelican-watch-case/

http://wornandwound.com/2012/07/06/reader-response-diy-pelican-watch-case/

Am looking at the Pelican 1470 with pick-and-pluck foam insert. This is Pelican case that's been sized for a 15" laptop. The material is tough as hell and nigh indestructible. The pick-and-pluck foam inside makes customising slots very easy.

I've contact the local distributor and the price is still very high at around S$300 each; furthermore, they don't have much stock and a new shipment isn't due till November.

I've contacted some US suppliers and am awaiting their confirmation if they will ship to SG and the current estimate is around S$200, all inclusive, possibly a little more with GST.

Please let me know if you're interested, we may be able to save on a bulk shipment which could offset the GST.

On another note, I'm also exploring additional options such as:

a) if we can silkscreen a forum logo on the box and will post here with regards to the additional cost as well as what the MOQ might be.

b) customised watercut foam inserts with foam watch cushions. Again will advise on cost and MOQ... this might be so prohibitive that it's not worth considering... will keep you informed.

Have fun and let me know your thoughts.

P/S BTW, I'll close the MO and proceed with my own order if there's no interest by the end of the month. Cheers!
Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case
Nice. Looks really good. Very portable and secure for holding 18 watches to gatherings...

Logos will be nice touch.

I'm interested.
Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case
Would be interested if we can do 18 watch slots and side slot for tools like in the second picture.

it can be self customised to ur needs as it's using 'pick & pluck' foam inside
Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case
Yup, Evirobie. Lunarin is right. The pick-and-pluck foam allows for easy self customization; just refer to the blogs above. What we can do is maybe gather somewhere with some space and customise our foam together, like an excuse to hang out.
Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case
Preliminary estimates are around $250 in SG.

Most sites won't ship to SG and the few who will, have only ONE token piece in their inventory. Had to ask some friends with military contacts to help... WIll keep bros apprised of further developments.
Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case
The response and interest is *yawn* overwhelming.

I'm gonna declare this thread closed and just go ahead and order for myself and a couple of others who have expressed interest. If you want one just PM me over this coming weekend before I place my order.

Price is under S$250 for a Pelican 1470. Shipping will take 6 to 8 weeks; can be faster but I'm too cheap to pay for expedited shipping--it's damn expensive.

FYI, this case sells at retail for around S$350 in SG.
Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case
There's Pelican distributor in Singapore and is e official distributor in Asia. Have u check with them and ask on the price? They r located at Suntec Tower3, Level 42-1, Tel: 68292168. Heard that they do sell the replacement foam too.

My idea is to convert a box or mine w "Pick n Puck" foam which can be source frm e said address above or 54 Tuas South St 5, S'pore637798. Ring 68160111. U need to provide dimension of your box interior and ask for the quote b4 you commit.

Have contacted the distributor on this matter. They're at Ubi; even been there before. Too darn expensive. Would love to know whose office is at Suntec. Marvid are the regional Disty and since their pricing is high, I would love to know if the Suntec ppl are the principal or a parallel disty.

What's the size you use ? I still haven't decided on 5x7 or 4x6... I was trying to measure with my watch yesterday, so far Puck is the biggest watch I have, 5x7 seems a good size, if I go 4x6 it will probably spill over the space between the slots..

hmm so much fun.
Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case

I use 4 x 7
Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case

I use 4 x 7

NICE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! C'mon populate it with watches already !!!

So I guess the 2 rightmost slots for tools or straps..

Cut out my first block 4x7 fits the puck nicely too, I doubt I have bigger watches, so I'm sticking to 4x7. Now the arrangement
Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case
Any more pics??

So obsessed was I over this case, I kept looking to see if I can get better options and better features while still maintaining the budget... I've been conducting MORE research and MORE testing... I even bought another box from another brand to test the difference (Pelican still rocks!). And spending more money on paying for tooling with a manufacturer... first samples are coming later this week. I'll post pics when I can over the weekend... oooooh! Can't wait!!

And I've made deal I think will make a lot of sense!!!

To cut a long story short, I contacted Pelican in the US, found out that they have now set up in Asia. Contacted the regional sales director and am meeting him for lunch on Fri. Have been briefed on the current distribution model and have worked out an in-principle agreement for a constant supply of various cases.

I've gotten tooling done for a... wait for it... custom 18-watch foam insert!! Like I said, samples are coming in by the end of the week. After I can get the price of the new stocks down to offset the cost of the foam and STILL sell the case for $250!!!!! Woohoo!!

And the bros who got cases from me before, I'll get you FREE inserts. It was your faith in me and the case that prompted me to look into this in the first place. Hopefully the production foam will arrive in time for our gathering...

... eh, are we still meeting??

Awesome.

Of cos, u are the organiser bro.

Put time, place, date prease

Close up of custom insert:

Notice the round pillows. Am getting more samples with denser foam in a darker colour.

This is looking great! What strap are you using for your Red Sardines?
Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case
I need nicer pillows. Haha the current based on the cut outs are too nua and flimsy.

Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case
Becky,

Thanks! But it looks so neat because this foam has been die-cut. It's not the regular pick-and-pluck one that comes standard with Pelican. This whole project has become somewhat of an obsession and I explored lots of options... even another case from another brand altogether! Have sunk a fair amount of change into this project already but should bear fruit soon. I'll post more pics after the weekend when I can shoot.

Evirobie,

The Sardines are on regular NATO straps. I find that I like the NATOs over the rubber ones and I can change colours to match the watch/mood very easily. The red on red is very eye catching!

One watch the definitely benefitted from a NATO is the Obris Morgan Branco:

I had bought the OMB on impulse and was not bonding with it at all. It was a nice watch but just not speaking to me. I didn't like the straps it came with and the whole look just kept it in the box. Then I went and bought a bunch of NATO straps from a online seller and happened to have an orange one left over after I strapped up a few watches... so on a whim I tried it on the OMB... and WOW! It's a whole different watch!
Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case
Here's a pic of the other brand... quality of product can't compete with Pelican. Finishing is not as good, though not apparent in this photo.

Re: Possible MO: Pelican 1470 for watch case
I've finally got everything in! Whoopee!!

Have posted up a new topic for these guys for sale.

And need to put together a gathering to pass some of you some freebies! Shall we say, a Saturday afternoon for tea?
