Hi all,



So recently, I was at a watch shop just browsing and observed the following and would like to know what your thoughts are



Observed Person A with a branded watch (S$4-6K range) who's intention was to polish a minor scratch (prob from desk diving/or brash across desk, wall etc) would say it not very visible but obviously it bothers the owner and they wants to polish it even tho its minor. Shop advises against it since polishing is not essential, however Person A is subtly insistant about it though they have been persuaded by others people there too to not be bothered. Polish or not? Or bo chap?



1) Would you think so hard about it? (take more than 1/2 hour and still undecided) :shock:

2) Take the advice given that one should just use the watch instead of baby to this extend?

3) Would you even have done this?

4) If this is only for expensive pieces, then why not just stick to lower end, not so heart pain when piang right?



I just wanted to get some feedback as it made me think about why people like us even collect timepieces. I am all for looking after your watches and its a compliment to those who do take extra care but at the same time, don't we buy watches because we like them, are wowed by the technical aspect, design, capability, etc and for some even status symbol (hope its helps one's ego because bo watch then how? No offense to anyone! :) )

maybe that's his 1st branded watch & his only watch?



if Mr A is like what you had described, I dun think it's even a preowned piece at all..if Mr A is so particular about these minor imperfection. A polished case is a high scratch magnet, this shld be taken into consideration before getting the watch, it's just a matter of time before the first minor scratch appears ;)



As most people who knows me, I'm not very particular about these minor issues unless it's a serious dings, hairline scratches are inevitable no matter how u take care of your watch..unless they's wrapped up in original factory plastics & such.



But once you starts to wear it, just be prepared for scratches :lol:



I wouldn't go poliseh my watch if i see some light scratches, I'll send for polishing only when the whole watch is chui with scratches..do it once & for all rather than so many times

I will try to baby my new watches as much as possible, preventing scratches or dings.



But for vintage or preown, I usually take it easy. But I don't pay to get it polish or re-finished as it will lose the factory finish.

I would polish minor scratches off myself. For the core pieces in my collection, I normally would not wear them (I have too many to meaningfully wear anyway). For my real beaters, I am ok with scratches, dings, dents. So long as these cosmetic defects do not affect the functionality of the watch, I feel that these add character to the watch, and for a really long-term beater, these in a way marks the passage of life. When we make the marks ourselves, we remember where and when the significant marks are made (watch bang lift door, scratch on baby seat, brushed against brick wall in Paris, etc).

small scratches just leave it lo..

unless big scratch or something unsightly then i polish over myself



vintage watch mostly leave them alone





aiya want to have it scratch free go wrap some bubble wrap over your wrist also lor

Personally I am fine with scratches.

Unless its a major ding I wouldn't bother to fix it.



I take care of my watches but I don't baby them.

But when I walk close to a wall or in a crowded place i usually will put my watch face against my body or pants so it won't accidentally brush into a wall or someone's diamond ring or $4-5k watch :lol:

Presentability... i guess that's the key word that's running around in his mind when he send his watch for polishing...



I think fellow brudders here have such experience before...

You might see some folks around you have a piece of MontBlanc clipped onto their shirt pocket, but yet they use common grade pens to deal with their works. Why? Have you wondered? Refill too expensive? Or the fountain ink too expensive? I don't think the roller ball pen can be as expensive as like over $20/pc. @ Mustafa Center, you can get a roller ball refill @ less than 12. So... why so troublesome?



Well... after a kopi session recently with an ex-platoon mate who's now an insurance agent, i'm surprise to find out that... that MontBlanc is not for his own use, but for his clients. And once his clients meeting session ends, he will go back, and clean up whatever finger prints that may be left on the pen, getting ready for the next meetup use.



So... if we're to use the same formula on that "Person A" you've mentioned... probably he's meeting lots of clients and worries that they will notice that fine scratch on his watch? :mrgreen:

R u sure clients will pay attention to the watch?

I do notice my clients very ex watches but I usually compliment and that it's man.



To scrutinize it is really beyond my tots... Hmm

I wld say I baby my watches as I will clean with ah bui's cloth (Thks bro for the gift) b4 keep it in my watch box... :mrgreen:



No for me regards to polish the watches if there is a desk diving scratch (acceptable for me) which this can't be avoid but however I came across any crowded place, I tend to use the other hand to cover the watch face to avoid scratches on the xtal... :mrgreen:

For me simple,If it is a second hand watch, i can live with the scratches as long it is not too glaring and it does not affect the functionality. I echoed what bro herz has said earlier on.

this thread brings to mind the pic floating around the net of tom cruise wearing his panerai with the rubber cover on.. hmm, can't seem to find the pic though

i dont think it was the rubber cover... i believe it was the protective plastic wrapping around the watch and bracelet :lol: :lol:



he didnt take it off.

I guess the most heartache shld b the v first ding/scratch.... But thereafter will get used to it.. I too will lve it as it is coz it signifies my usage..

I think if it's a sport or dive model then looks sexier with some "scars" on it. Anyway, people seem happy to pay for "patina", "fading" and "yellowing" nowadays, so why not?

It you want to buy a watch and yet worry of scratching it.... Then no point buying. Watch is to buy and wear mah... If wear sure got scratches! If boh keep in safe lor... Once in a while take out and admire... "wah!".... Shook Liao put back in safe.
