Canon camera lens....recommendation?

Where is a good place to get a canon lens? 'good place' means cheap, fix price, genuine product with warranty. Looking for a, probably discon model, EF 100 USM macro lens , or some other canon macro lens. Recommendation/ suggestion? Thanks

So far I always get brand new camera equipment from MS color.... there's a few other shops like those john 316, cathay photo etc etc but I'm not too familiar with them.



Then for grey sets, DD eletronics is another popular choice.



I'm using EF-S 60mm macro, working well for me... 100mm is a longer focal length, so I think the setup can be quite ley chey, longer working distance. You can ask sinner, he has a ef 100mm macro..

Email cathay photo for a quote, will get much better price than "walk in customer". IMHO john 316 prices are not competitive ....

Also try TK photo at Funan ...



100mm has greater working distances, so it's good for insects and other subjects that could "go away" quickly.

For static object (eg watches) then 50-60mm is good

Thanks roo. I think your 60mm macro is oso the USM movement. I might just get that 60mm macro to go with my 60D if i cant find the 100mm macro. For still subjects, I suppose the shorter macro is probably better. But for subjects like insects, they probably will feel less intimidated by longer macro. Sinner and anyone else, your input will be appreciated. :)

Have u also considered the tamron 90mm macro ? It's got a good reputation ....

you should just go vivo, canon show room and try the lens.... 100mm is hard to manage and like u guys mentioned, it's good for bugs where you can stand further away and shoot.... 60mm is fine with watches and sometimes I use it as a normal lens.... lol

Most of my watch shots are using a standard 35mm lens w/ extension tube. (some using even wider lens -- 25mm or 21mm ) .

So it depends on what will be the subjects u expect to shoot for this lens.



I also have a cheapo 100mm phoenix macro lens which gives great results.

No, i have not played with tamron or phoenix lens before. So far only nikkor lens with F3, ya i know it's old, very old but me ah pek what :lol: :lol: :lol:

Yup, go to the showroom and try out several options.

Serious (aka mad) people have 2 macro lens -- the 180 for outdoors and the 50/60 for indoor static objects.

Yup 100mm might be a bit far to manage. I sometime used my cheapo 50mm :)



Why not consider used lens in clubsnap?

yes, I have looked at clubsnap's sale section before (actually was looking for watches in that forum :lol: :lol: :lol: ). Some of the offers are quite good but I have not bought a used lens before so donno what to look for NOT to buy :lol:

I thought the 100mm macro was a good compromise between a short and a long,say 180mm, macro. If i cant find the 100mm one, I'll go for a shorter macro lens.

Btw, the 100mm macro i'm looking for is the older version, and not the new 'L' version.

Getting a used lens from forums can be risky. Unless u know exactly how to check, inspect and test the lens on the spot, there's a chance you will get one with undisclosed defect.

Q : Do u need 1:1 .

A: I use extension tubes (kenko triple extension tube set) to get beyond 1:1 on a macro lens (in the rare event that one needs the extreme closeup) .

Yah, at 1 point i was considering extension tubes.. but I couldn't find it and if you use the normal tubes, AF don't work so can be quite challenging, so ended up with an used 60mm.. so far I'm very happy with it.

1. Strange canon AF doesn't work with extension tubes, I have no problems with nikon AF w/ kenko ext tubes

2. With extreme magnifications (close to 1:1 and larger), AF becomes slow and spotty (manual focus and focus using forward/backward physical movements are commonly used).

When I was researching on it, I found that there's 2 type of tubes, 1 with electronics to link the lens to the body, 1 without.. but concluded that tubes although flexible, it's too troublesome for me.. haha..
