Watch Repair Dilemna

Watch Repair Dilemna
Hi all,

I need some advise with regards to watch Repair...

I bought a quartz watch, Model -> SRL021P1, from an oversea online shop -> Ebay "dabrands" in April 2011

So over the months (I think is 3-4 months after I bought the watch), the watch stopped ticking. So I sent it for repair @ Thong Sia, which they say is due to the oil in the gear. After a month, the date hand dropped off and I had to send it for repair at Thong Sia again.

Now, the watch stopped running again and sadly, the warranty has since passed.

So, I feel pissed off by this watch. Don't know whether it is a lemon or what. Mind you, this is not seiko 5 (No offense) I am talking about. I didn't pay peanuts and still got monkeys.

So, I am asking for advice whether it still make sense to sent this watch for repair or should I just forget about it. Also, if send for repair, where should I send it to? Thong Sia or others?

Thanks.

Sorry for the long post.
Re: Watch Repair Dilemna
Hi,firstly like to welcome you to SCS..

I am not too sure of this model but got an idea after a quick google...

It wouldnt be a lemon as Thong Sia would never have accepted fakes for servicing.

The problem with your watch now could be;

-dead battery hence need a battery replacement(if you did not change batt at Thong sia the previous time).

-cicruit block issue,coil issue that caused the malfunction.

It could be just a simple fix but hope you get it check once and for all if you dont mind spending some more money on the servicing.

(if its a malfunction on circuit,TS might suggest a movement change for you)

anyway Seiko5 are all automatic watches;

Seiko 5 is Seiko's introductory line of automatic watches. It is also Seiko's oldest and longest continually used sub-brand. The "5" stands for the watch's 5 principal attributes:

1. Diaflex (unbreakable mainspring),

2. Diashock (Seiko's shock resistant design, equivalent to the Swiss "Incabloc"),

3. Automatic winding,

4. day/date indication, and

5. Water resistant.
Re: Watch Repair Dilemna
1st time I've heard issues with a quartz Premier.

Maybe like ossimm mentioned, try to replace the batt 1st.

the fixing of the date hand is an easy fix.
Re: Watch Repair Dilemna
Hi,

Thanks for the reply.

I doubt it is due to the battery issue (Although I should not rule it out), as during the 1st servicing at Thong Sia, I suggested to them that the battery maybe flat, but they have checked and say that the battery is fine with stable voltage.

Should I bring the watch to Thong Sia or K2 for servicing? How much would that cost usually?

To add, other then the frequent breakdown of this watch, the time keeping of this watch is excellent and has been accurate without me needing to adjust it every so often.

if it's me, i will send it to K2 & get a quote.

worse case senario, I will get another watch to replace it the the prob persists even after servicing.

the watch might be faulty in the 1st place
Re: Watch Repair Dilemna
Battery life is not so easy 2 predict...battery tester can show u the battery is GD but 2molo it can DIE off...:)

yup true ;)

On a side note;

A battery life can be affected by few areas like prolonged storage (passed the 'good use' date), improper storage prior usage(near high temperature place/exposure to direct sunlight/near magnetic field ) . there are poorer quality and fake batteries too.

Get a quote first then see if its worth to spend the money repairing.. unless its of some sentimental value.

You can also learn more of the movement/watch model by googling about it or search in International watch forums,if there are similar case of malfunction,shortcomings to the design etc.
Re: Watch Repair Dilemna
sorry to ask, but how much does it cost to service a vintage seiko generally?
