i hv tried with a PAM replicas or homage, but in the end still flipped it coz it never stays on my wrist / rotation long enough.

I won't wear a replica, but I have bought (and destroyed!) some cheap replicas (read: fakes) to practice assembly and disassembly. They are useful as practice targets. No heart pain, since I will neither collect nor wear them.



As for homages, i haven't made up my mind on them. On one hand they are well-priced (and some are well-specc'd too) enough for many to enjoy the time-honoured designs without burning a huge hole in the pockets. On the other hand, the faint smell of plagiarism does take away some of the enjoyment (for me..)



Also, homages are a category diffcult to define. Other than some outright homages, many others pay homage more obliquely, making defining homages as a category difficult.



End of the day, I'd assign a premium to the movement first. Some movements are difficult to pay "homage" to, because of the complications or engineering behind.

Yesterday i was at an outing with a couple of friends when I noticed one of them had a panerai on, a pam 111 to be exact. I was surprised to find out that it was a replica. I have to say, the level of details was astonishing close to a gen piece. I have friends with gen pam 111s so i've tried on and seen one in close proximity and I have to say the rep blew me away with its level of accuracy. His logic was that the movement used in some of these pams and other brands are the ETA movements which can be had at usd200-300, he sees no sense in buying such gen watches at $6000-7000 when a rep cost only a mere fraction, and most people won't be able to tell the difference. His hard-earned money is better spent on in-house movements.



What are your opinions guys? TBH, I'm on the fence regarding this. On one hand it is wrong to support the rep industry, on the other hand, what do u do when a watch u love is out of your reach? Purchase a rep and get instant though diminished gratification or suck it and accept the fact that you may never afford it? Is it plain black and white for you guys, or is this in the grey shady area?

1. if u want a pam, get one with in-house movements (eg 233, 270, 311, 384 ), no rep (movement) will come close ...

2. if $ is a concern, then there's lots of homages with eta, chinese, jap movements ...

the basic pam are really overpriced imo, so i kind agree with your friend.



and pam are getting to hv a reputation just like certain rolexes, even when u have a real one, you will still get asked if its real :roll: :roll:



personally, i've tried a couple of replicas before, but sad to say they never stayed on my wrist for very long... just knowing its a replica eats away at me and it could never satisfy... but that's just me :oops: :oops:

I think the ethical dimension of the argument should take greater prominence. Specifically on wearing fakes, it is black and white for me.



As I mentioned in an earlier post, homages are trickier for me. Some offer a genuine modern interpretation, while some are verbatim copies. So the mileage varies for me when it comes to homages.
