Why is a Tuna so popular?

Why is a Tuna so popular?
Hi bros, I'm new in the Seiko Club and was introduced by OsimO.

After reading through the threads... One question came to my mind. Seems like a lot of bros here liked the "Tuna"... Well there are several types of it... But what makes it so attractive??

After looking through the pics, I also feel it is nice. But can you bros share why is it so popular?

Hi bro. Welcome to Seiko Club (SC).

i liked the tuna, but took a long time to commit to one because it was quartz (and the auto one was way out of my reach).

for me, the reason i like the tuna is the history behind it.

Seiko took 7 years to develop it's first professional dive watch and didn't release any dive watches in those 7 years. All because of a complaint letter from a professional diver back in the 1960s.

what the Seiko R&D team came up with was the 6159 600m professional dive watch... i find it quite amazing.

u can read the history yourself here:

http://www.thewatchsite.com/index.php?topic=155.0" false;

that's my reason.. i only have one tuna (SBBN007). the rest of the bros here can share their wonderful collection.
Re: Why is a Tuna so popular?
hello bro...welcome to SCS =D glad to see you around.

popular for many reasons... 'Tuna' is a rather 'must have/once had' for Seiko dive watch collectors..there are many types of tuna like the automatic, quartz and even a smaller size kinetic(baby). And because 'tuna' was produced over a wide range of series over decades till present hence probably some point of time,a collector will have least one in his collection....just a matter of time..

who doesnt like well designed, good movement, iconic, manly watches?

The more popular quartz ones would be the 300m quartz tuna (sbbn007 or marinemaster tunas SBBN017/SBBN015). If you like vintage classic tuna, can try the 7549 300m tuna(SQ/no SQ on dial).

There are also 600m golden tuna,600m ashtray(not tuna but iconic),1000m golden tuna etc.

If you want auto tunas, you can try SBDX011(emperor tuna with 8L35 movt) or vintage 6159 600m tuna
Re: Why is a Tuna so popular?
Many reasons to love a tuna.. I find it's design fresh, in a sense that, you don't see rolex or omega having similar design.. It looks tough on shark mesh and isofrane rubber strap (as you dwell deeper into the world of diver's watch, you'll realise that not many watches could actually pull off a shark mesh and/or an isofrane strap)

Historically speaking, it's seiko's answer for japanese divers' appeal, so what's not to love.. Take your time, no rush.. It took me some time to get over the fact that this 'mere quartz' will cost more than you've ever imagined..

Have fun and welcome :)
Why is a Tuna so popular?
I will offer you my non-expert and probably another shallow view of mine.

1) it is a diver watch

2) it is big

3) with the shroud, it looks really unique, it also looks like a specially engineered precision tool

4) it is supposedly a more upscale diver model

The list goes on.

Re: Why is a Tuna so popular?
Simple...

Just like give a MAN a tiger beer(tuna)....
Why is a Tuna so popular?
initially when I first saw the tuna I was like what is this ugly ass watch... but after a while it just grew on me. and I guess its the unique design that got the attention of many bros here too...

Re: Why is a Tuna so popular?
Also made a "hole" in yr wallet
Re: Why is a Tuna so popular?
For me, I like them because they started out as a purpose-built watch, with WR no less than 300m, targeting professional diving. (The recent funky white and blue variants are very unfortunate exceptions departing from the original brief in my opinion. )

I'm not sure if the shrouds are more form or function, but I'm inclined to think that they offer some form of protection to the watch cases. They also do not use HEV (even for the 1000m models), which is again testament to the engineering of their cases. Design-wise they seem to project toughness, functionality, and a lot of charm. ;)

Re: Why is a Tuna so popular?
Well thanks to all the bros for your views. Think of you had somehow sum up why Tuna was so popular. Frankly I was initially amazed by the number of talks over it, took a look and was like "what the heck, how come this weird watch with a "casing" outside is so popular?'" but as the days goes by, looking at the different "tuna" that everyone is posting n buying, I also starts to "grew" with it.... Yah it does looks nice....U guys r right. It took sometime to grow to love it.

So now the ultimate question. Some of the auto high end tuna can cost up to few K (Wah lao!). Quartz maybe still lesser in price but by no means cheap. I would prefer to go for a auto one which is of respectable size, look and reasonable price. Of coz at the end of the day, a auto Mechanical one will also have more retaining value over the years. Can give some guides on the estimated cost, where is the place i can see a wide range of Tuna? Does the cover comes in additional?

used quartz tunas start from S$600 onwards, and the prices will stretch to over S$5000 for the rarer autos.

What "cover" are you referring to? The thing around the case is it? If so, yes that is part of the watch, and it "comes" with it.

Where to see a wide range? I think the Seiko Club SG anniversary luncheon is the place to see a really wide range. You can register your attendance here: http://forums.seikoclubsg.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=2131" false;

Don't be tempted, it is over-rated, and if you think it looks bad in photos, it is even worse in the metal.

The rose gold sho glaring

Look at the fugly sun-burst chocolate dial, sho bright cannot see the time properly

No no no. On the contrary, it looks stunning I would say.

Personally feel this is currently the "IN" watch. The look and the design is bery gd.

Almost pull the trigger at ah goh's place. Almost pull again when hunting my green green g-shock at bencoolen.

Will pull the trigger at mustafa if not for the fact I met a pretty lady that distracted me from the showcase.

Hiaz, looks like it is going to be a fruitless effort to resist after your series of photos.
