Funny enough before I put the strap on the tuna I tried bending, twisting and pulling the strap to looks for cracks or breaks. It was very sturdy.

But it broke without warning or reason.

I had my hands on my lap while talking to collick and it just broke.

Really scary

The z22 came with my skx007j in 2007 iirc

I've worn it a lot. Swimming at ocean as well.

Very nicely curved too. Quite sad it broke.

Anyway lunchtime I went back to change back to leather strap :)

haha.. if i dont come back any sooner, i think roo will do that.

oh my.. i still have one z22 as well... not i'm kinda afraid to strap it on to my tuna! :?
Re: Old Seiko rubber straps... Scary
the usual 25 dollar from TS seiko z20 z22 is plastic ba.. not really rubber

ananta diver since higher spec maybe using proper rubber? last time read before some Tunas use Dalouz rubber, a different compound.

rubber failure probably more of rip when bent, the seiko plasticky one is jitau snap crisply into 2. feel free to correct me ;)
Re: Old Seiko rubber straps... Scary
This is rather disturbing. The usual resin rot would have precursors... e.g. sticky strap, crack lines...

This time it snapped w/o any early warnings... Big-e could have been swimming by the shore and there goes the entire watch.
Re: Old Seiko rubber straps... Scary
I have broken a few including the MM rubber strap. I am still using them and recently I put them in boiling water hoping they would last longer. :D
Re: Old Seiko rubber straps... Scary
Could the cause be the humidity?

my broken z22 was put into hot water the very first time before i wear it.

it give the strap a nice curve and more comfortable to wear.

i am not sure if putting it in boiling water to prolong the life will work. never tried it yet.

If the strap was unused for too long, I will definitely boil it before using.

So far, I have never boiled brand new ones but I have read that there are people who do that. It is supposed to make the strap softer.

ive put a few new rubber straps into hot water before: Z22, B22, mm300 rubber

it doesnt really soften it (of course when it is hot, it feels softer. but once back to room temp, it feels normal again).

BUT the strap is curved to the shape (curvature) of the cup and it stays that way. So when you wear it, it is curved around your wrist - hence "feels" more comfortable.
Re: Old Seiko rubber straps... Scary
After seeing this thread, i immediately remove the seiko rubber from my mm300 and changed to Isofrane one...

Quite scary to me.....

No need to freak out.

Generally the Seiko rubber straps are super reliable for the first 2-3 years IMO.

But when they start feeling a little sticky (especially after storage) that's when you start worrying.
Re: Old Seiko rubber straps... Scary
i think this is the most common problem for all rubber straps. regards of whether seiko or not.

i had a extra sinn rubber strap that was cut to the shortest by previous owner and its barely 2 years, now sticky liao :(

but yes, i do agree the boiling does not really prolong the life of the strap. for what i have experience, it only makes the strap more comfortable.

btw, do you guys think if there is any kind of cream or lotions that can be applied to maybe prevent the rubber from cracking? like those we apply for leather?
Re: Old Seiko rubber straps... Scary
Thanks for the kind explaination big-e-294...

Better be safe....cannot imagine if suddenly the rubber strap snapped and my poor watch landed on the hard concrete floor!!!!!
Re: Old Seiko rubber straps... Scary
i think the humid weather in singapore also contributes to the breakdown of the rubber straps... so better keep them beside some thirsty hippos!
