$129 watch winder

$129 watch winder
Hi Bros,

Since I had only 1 Seiko Diver, my Sumo, I would manual wind it then give it a shake for 2 minutes and put it back in the watch box.

Today, I have 2 monsters, 1 stargate, a 7002, 2 Bellmatics, an Orient and my Sumo. All automatic movements, I can no longer find the time nor patience to shake each of them for 2-3 mins, so I have been looking around for watch winder deals.

Generally single watch winders on a single rotor cost around $100 or more and I have questioned myself the need for buying one. Today I saw an ad in my inbox, watch winder with dual rotor to wind 2 watches at $120. So for bros who want to keep your automatics wound without too much human intervention, please click on the link http://www.atcrazy.com/deals/dealMain.aspx?prm=a3bjXsQNIK3N8alCsSN/yA==

you would need to register first.

Please note that this is an Ad that I came across and I have just paid for one, I do not know the seller! Just thought to share, maybe some bros would be interested.

There's another school of thought. Keeping your watches on winder introduce more wear and tear :)

I didnt think about that bit :)

It's convenient to keep a few pieces on rotation if you wear them often.

As long as they don't have any complications, don't leave them on the winder, since setting time is very straight forward.

Re: $129 watch winder
im with the 2nd school of thought ,

i have many new old stock watches from the 60s that are still working great after 50 years locked away. Even if they dont run , a simple service will clear up the dirt/dried oils

on the contrary if we are talking about worn out/ damaged parts, u will need to source for spare parts and thats 1 big headache...

you dont have to wind/ shake all your watches everyday , just set the time and wind when you wear em , wont take more than a min and also helps you develop that special bond with your watch

+1 agreed with fireal.

i love setting the time on my watches and winding them before i wear.

normally i will wear a watch for 2-3 days then change to another.

there are time when i need to rush out the door, so i will set the time when i am in the car waiting at traffic light.

or if take bus/mrt, set while waiting.

otherwise, if got nothing to do, then decide what to wear the night before and set the time. ;)

I don't keep my car engine running either.   nor my washing machine spinning.

The watch winder should be seen more as a convenience thing rather than a maintenance thing though.
Re: $129 watch winder
Thanks for all bros opinions, certainly good learning for me at least.

Anyway, this thread was to share these watch winders for sale at what I feel is a "good price" for bros planning to get one. :D
Re: $129 watch winder
Watch winder is ok 4 me...:)

Yes agree constant rotating wil wear the gears in the watch

But if the watch is a screw down crown n u rotate maybe 3-4 days n got 2 unlock the crown u r also wearin the thread...:)

So is lppl 2 me

OT again

Car tyre if pump 2 much pressure the ctr wil wear faster n not stable but save fuel

If pump 2 low the both outer wil wear faster n more stable but high fuel consumption

So which 1 better?

DUN SHOOT ME HOR...
Re: $129 watch winder
Beware when buying watch winders. There were cases of watch winder catching fire due to overheating, resulting in charred watches.

Well said :)
Re: $129 watch winder
I kept a few of my watches on winder... Well... I mean how not to wear and tear? Watches are made to be worn and constantly moved.. They are different from cars.

Ok... Better keep quiet Liao...... Hahahahahah... My honest opinion :)
Re: $129 watch winder
i share some of the impromptu experiments i did with regards to power reserve of the watch using different ways to wind it up.

The watch i used, a Orient revolver , 200m divers watch. Has a power reserve meter, so easy to gauge.

most common, wearing it, fastest i got it to full 40 hrs on the PR meter was less than 3 hrs, longest was abt 7 hrs, usually 4-5 hrs avg.

putting it in the pocket inside a pouch, abt half a day, its full charge. ( dun be surprise, i found this out by accident, i wore 1 and had another watch to work before. the whole day i didnt changed watch. came back and found the watch in the pocket running and well over a day. so i tried it with the orient pr meter) Note< i spent lotsa time at work walking ard the fab, as my machines are located at various places ard.

on 2 different winders a fren has,

on the 4 watch winder (DC9v adaptor plug in to the mains) with 4 separate slots, in abt 24hrs, abt 20hr PR wound up.

on another 4 watch winder, but 2 slots, each can take 2 watches, (2AA powered), aso abt 24 hrs, less than 10 hrs pr wound up.

Both winder i chose similar winding patterns, roughly its like 10 mins cw turning, rest 5 mins, then 10 mins ccw turning then rest 5 min.

the winding patterns timing, i agar agar only, but for sure, it turns ccw and cw, not just single direction.

Based on the results, wearing the watch actually has the most wear and tear, as its able to wind up the watch in the shortest time.not forgetting the knocks it gets, even putting ur hands down on the table is a shock, though minor, and most auto watches are anti shock to some sense.

Of cos the watch was built to be worn, not just a standalone mechanical device or machine,

its a comparison using the time to built up power reserve as a reference.

Most of the winders u can get cheaply, are usually cheap spin off the expensive winders( cost like few hundreds even for a single winder??).

the use simple motor and cheapo tamiya like gearbox , 555 timers built circult.

watch winder i believe start off as some machine to keep the complicated movements , esp perpetual calenders running, as setting them each time would be too time consuming.

i read, the true mccoys are usually powered by microprocessors and precision servo motor.

most watch makers define a certain TPD, turns per days to keep the watch running minimally, simply said, such winders are able maintain the movement running at a very low power reserve.

IN this aspect, its ironically, but can we say keeping the watch in the winder has less wear and tear than wearing it on the wrist??

or we cant truly gauge the watch winder as we usually dun have a true blue well designed pc in the 1st place to begin with??

Not forgetting, when watch is fully wound up, main spring is fully tightened, the so call clutch will go into de-clutch mode to stop winding the main spring, but the rotor and gears are still at work, this also cause wear and tear.

Then we go to not using winders, setting them each time we use it.

like cars and machine, when we start them up there's some inevitable wear and tear, things like worn crown thread, worn crown, to broken stem, damaged mechanisms, esp the parts that holds on the stem and the 1st and 2nd clicking part, how much is too hard and how soft is just enuff to prevent damage on the stem??

last but not least, for watches with hand-winding capabilities, hand-winding saves the trouble of using a winder and a daily turns of 15-20 shld be able to keep the watch running, some say this is a wear and tear on the gear. well, lets just say if its a true winding watch, with non auto movement, dun you think the gear would be far gone?? if it comes with winding feature, the winding gears technically should be able to withstanding winding .

i think hand-winding is a in-between of running a watch winder and manually shaking up the watch .

you get the wear and tear from the winding gears, crown and stem. but save the wear and tear on the rotors.

main spring would not be wound up fully as after winding, w/o the de-clutching effect as well, main spring is working itself out till pr goes totally zero.

AS you see, wearing the watch, putting in winder, or even winding it up.

All has wear and tear on different parts of the watch.

Each has his views on this, so long you are happy with the end results, be it keeping the watch running by hand-winding or watch winder or setting them when you wanan wear.

I'm sharing this from some things i tried and tested, dun flame me hor.

Just do what you like and preferred.

usually the stuff or methods we like , we are always biased to think better and favored it, regardless of its true capabilities.

vice-versa for thing you dun like, even if its really good, mentally ya already biased and will think all sorts of shit abt it.
