My wife was planning to get me a 130 Annivesary GS as a surprise gift for my Birthday as well to commemorate our 13 yrs together as a couple.



After many attempts to obtain 1 at both Singapore and Hong Kong outlet... we decided that the GS Hi-Beat was the One. We originally wanted to split cost for an IWC Portugeses Automatic but the price in HK is about the same in Singapore.



Here is a picture I took when I return to work after my HK trip (where we bought the GS Hi-Beat), along with my Japan ride. Sorry for the hasty shot with my iphone while at the traffic light.







Surprisingly, with the help of my longtime mate, Bro Edmund who intro me to this forum... we manage to be the first customer to enter the Vivo City Seiko Outlet and purchase the 130 Annivesary Steel edition GS. Even the recep who was doing the parking claim was surprised that my receipt was from the Seiko Boutique and she mentioned that the Manaement has yet to open them it has open :)



Will post more pics of my GS Hi-Beat and the 130 Annivesary soon. Hope to meet up with you guys soon.

Beautiful GS Bro Bnl got. This GS looks very different in terms of case shape n e desirable HiBeat. My Bet on e price will be ard 9Grand ??? Btw, I havent had any experience at Seiko GS showroom

Bro Kermit, the staff seem a bit inexperience in handling the GS and knowledge of GS also lacking... just received a call from them to say that they forgot to hand me the timing Cert, no wonder I noticed that the HK boutique has but not the Singapore one... Discount wise, above $9k is 15%, others at 10%, accurate as at yesterday :)

Bought mine in hk, it's RRP was HK$53000. price in Singapore is almost the same depending on the exchange rate. If it below 6, Singapore is cheaper.

U c, GS is really a darn fine watch for man who likes finer things in life. Believe u dont just keep Seiko GS, how abt other makes ?



Gee... I can't even afford to get one simple GS quartz for myself although I have e lust for a Seiko GS GMT for almost 3yrs now. Y am I waiting for ??? 2012 perhaps !

I went down to the boutique and still cannot bring myself to hoot one. The ones I like are the 9k+ ones. Trying to rationalise why GS instead of "another" Rolex is difficult.... I also got mindset :(

To be truthful, my original intention was only the 130 anniversary steel model, after multiple failed attempts and when I held the GS Hi-Beat... Fell in love with the Hi-Beat. I have read reviews that GS quality and finishing are excellent but to actually hold it and feel in, was such a wonderful feeling.

Then, by luck or chance, bro Edmund was at vivo for the opening of seiko boutique... He managed to get first hand info that the 130 anni model still available and I could purchase it... How to than leh...



My watches are for wearing, I rotate them so I get to wear them often. My preferece is still manual winding watches, got chance everyday to wind them and give them a polish. As for finer things, guess my one of my old collegue got me interested in appreciating finer things... Doesn't have to be very expensive and also not meaning u need to own them. Even getting to hold them and appreciate it at the show room is good enough.



Guess now the most ex watch is my GS Hi-Beat, and from my wife as a gift holds great value.

True. Blancpain? JLC? FM? Omega 9300? At GS hi beat price range the competition is stiff, the GS has to fight with the big boys and it no longer enjoys the relative advantage from lower pricing. For GS price I can always buy a Zenith, if I want a hi-beat.



At price range of around 10k, absolute advantage becomes important. There must be technology and branding. GS has technology, but I feel that the distributor must work on the branding, to earn the price premium. For a start, selling GS 30 cm away from Seiko5 surely must offend the sensibilities of non-WIS.



That said, I still want a GS hi-beat :mrgreen:

Or else it's just another city chain outlet. No sense of exclusivity.

Very true, at price range above 5k, lots of brands to choose from... Personally, in-house movement with technology advances is important else it's pure branding. For example, before Panerai has it's own movement, the appeal of PAM is almost purely from it's branding... Even now, suppose the appeal still from it's branding rather than it's in-house movement.



Agree with bros here that GS branding should be improved. My friends wonder why ppl pay so much for a Seiko... However, branding likely will increase the cost of GS... So should it maintain status quo and thus GS owners become a special breed rather then mass market appeal... Just my thoughts, thanks

Just to continue the discussion a bit more....



I feel that GS branding must be part of the package at current prices. The GS line has no absolute advantage in terms of technology (not at the RRP ~$10k region). The entire Seiko watch line use in-house movements, and I believe that because of that it is even more important to distinguish GS both horizontally (against other luxury brands or manufactures) and vertically (between the various tiers of Seikos, because lower tiers of Seiko are also of very high standards). GS movements, do not offer mechanical complications that are exclusive to Seiko. So they must also play the brand game. If I pay $9k for a GS, then I would want some recognition, perhaps not of my financial ability, but at least recognition that a Grand Seiko is a fine timing instrument. If I want to spend 9k (a lot of money to me) and yet stay low-profile, I'm better off sticking to a nice reliable (and also in-house movement) 6R15.



Springdrive is also in a large way a power-train development, and falls out of the traditional mechanical movements that a buyer with GS budget might also be considering.



Separately, on PAMs, I think sometimes the in-house movements are over-rated. Collectors and hype will often favour in-house movements, but unless there is a complication that is only available in certain in-house movement, why not save a up to a few thousands and go for a non-in-house? The PAM380 is one good example: it does not use in-house movement, but it is much more affordable (a few mths old pieces can go for abt S$4.7k). A similar Radiomir (ok plus sandwich dial) with in-house movement will cost thousands more, while offering little additional mechanical innovation other than being an in-house movement. What's wrong with ETA movements? A lot of them have seen decades of service, and have proven their reliability. Why should newer, less time-tested in-house movements be automatically be regarded as more desirable?

My view on ETA movement... The main concern would be parts to service and how much can be modified.. Unless the brand is part of Swatch group, the cost of using and servicing ETA movement increases overtime and the supplynofnsuch movement has been controlled in recent years. Agree that many in-house movement are not technically superior than ETAs, but many Brands consider themselves as True Manufactures due to the fact that they ar able to produce their own movement. In addition, they are willing to spend $$$ on R&D... Of course, we as buyers often have to pay these extra costs.



Hopefully, Seiko or who ever distributes GS will start promoting the GS brand... Maybe starting with Hi-Beat movements which are proven technically on par with Swiss movements. Also, various watch forums must have interest in the GS brand and post review to stir up interest. The internet serves as a platform at which interested buyers gather info like ppl search on car reviews to ponder their next purchase.
