Introduction to DOXA
I've been looking around for an orange divers watch for a while now.. SICs with isofrane strap is just too much to resist, so I told myself, I'm gonna strap on an isofrane on my orange divers one day.. All this time orange monster is the sole candidate on my list till this morning when DOXA came into the picture.. It's settled then, my first orange divers is gonna be a DOXA, then I'm gonna get isofrane and shark mesh..



Went to their website and read around to find a reason to get one (don't you just love learning a little history about your watch and pass it on to your friends ?) I gotta say, beside being worn by the legendary diver Monsieur Jacques, I can't see anything else to backed their cult following status..



Not that I don't agree with their prices, it's just that I'm curious, for a watch to command that price tag (and that cult following), there must be something I'm missing here.. Is it their pioneer in introducing the orange dial divers ? Is it the conquistador helium escape valve (HEV) ? Is it their lume (would love to see how they lit up in the dark) ? is it their movement (ETAs btw) ?



Seniors (hint: bro r007, this is your cue :lol: ) like to share some knowledge on this ? Probably share with us what got you into DOXAs ?

The thing that interests me about Doxa is its connection with Clive Cussler, one of my favourite authors when I was younger however the brand bothers me somewhat as its pretty much a resurrected "zombie" brand with no links to the original DOXA.

Yeah, I figured being featured in Clive Cussler's work must be somethin like a Bond effect on the sales of Rolex Sub.. Bro sola is spot on, it is pretty much a resurrected brand with little to no historical connection to the original DOXA..



So far I'm drawing up that it is in fact sentimental factors that accounts to DOXA's prices today.. Like how a, probably, 4k worth rolex submariner commands prices such as 8k..

I gotta say, I got hooked on Doxa for the longest time but couldn't pull the trigger on a brand new one.







When I saw this on sale, I was like wow, should I get this and at the same time fill a gap that I was missing for a long time. A GMT movt :lol:



So, it's part of my collection now :lol:

A GMT diver is a cool feat, I'm torn between a DOXA with HEV or the GMT function.. Its gotta be orange though.. Cheers on your acquisition bro..

Don't assume I purchased at list price. I could have purchased at a much higher used price.



Sometimes used prices for certain landmark reissued Doxas are even higher than new. You might save yourself some money going new, avoiding landmark reissues, and going for less collectible models.

Ed, this Doxa that you linked to is not the same Doxa being discussed here. Like Sandoz, the Doxa brand has also been licensed out, and in asian markets we can find a slew of Doxa "datejusts", "daytonas", and other homage-esque designs. There are a lot of this strain of Doxa in Malaysia. Very nice, but should be considered as a separately brand with a separately line-up.



I believe the ones Oscar is referring to are from here: http://www.doxa.org/"rice beads" bracelets... I notice them when they were first resurrected, and many of the initial models used NOS cases (and were thus limited in production accordingly).

I have no idea about the existence of this homage DOXAs until Ed's post :p but yeah, I'm talking about the orange divers DOXA.



Thanks for the insight, bro Herza.. Given me a whole new perspective on this brand that we've yet to learn much about.. Given the fact that almost all of their available model are re-issues from the past, i'd say your more likely to stumble upon an landmark model, hence good price for current owners when they're flipping their orange divers :) Bro herza's explanation answers why at any given time and model, their offerings are limited in production..

I think a 1200T is unlikely to retain much value used, so if you are looking for an entry watch to Doxa, that might be a good place to start. The 1200T is "small" though.

The 750T GMT is probably another piece that can be purchased cheaper used. These are current production models that seem to be still well-stocked.

RIce beads, orange dial, cushion case, dual bezel --> to me these make the Doxa sub. The variants are nice but I'd would want at least a piece that has the hallmark design before venturing to their other offerings.

@ bro Herza: Let's add HEV on top of your specs for a DOXA, which I concur, (Cushion Case, Orange Dial, Rice Bead bracelet, Dual Bezel, preferably Hallmark Design).. Which model would you recommend ? I might be missing something here, but a DOXA watch with the above specs does not exist.. I don't actually mind if it doesn't have a steady re-sale value..

I think you are right, it doesn't seem to exist. Why would you want a HEV? A SInn U1 doesn't need one, the Autozilla needs one, both are 1000M. An omega seamaster 300m has a HEV, a rolex submariner doesn't, and neither does an MM300. I'd infer that for the same depth rating, a case that doesn't require a HEV is superior to one that does. Únless the HEV is installed for aesthetic purposes given that it lends the watch some seriousness.... :mrgreen:

Molested roo di di one before.... solid cushion case but what attract me about this one is the solid feel of the bezel which is on par with LM bezel. No harm to molest yours too... hehehe.... :mrgreen:

I think the closest is the 1200T or 750T GMT as I mentioned earlier... :D Prices should be friendly. Current models also. The 750T GMT should be bigger than the 1200T, and I think you would want the bigger cased 750T GMT... it really brings out the orange and the cushion case. I'm iffy on the dual-crown of the 750T GMT, and iffy on the size of the 1200T. But if I were to pick one, 750T GMT, for my 6.75" wrist size.

My wrist is about 6,5' too, and I'm close to 1,9m in height, I could strap on 45mm or 46 fine but personally I like my watches to be around 42mm give or take 2mm (the DOXA fits the criteria just fine in my book) :D

According tot their website, they did appoint certain retailers for certain model in America.. Buyers out of that continent, gotta buy direct from them through their website

they are the ones that look like those using generic MIC cases. got slammed pretty bad when it first came out.



many felt that its design as a whole detracted largely from what makes DOXAs unique

to me what makes a usual Doxa diver stand out amongst the dive watches out there is the combination of



hand styling: thin short hour hand, very fat and long minute hand, second hand with a square chunk

cushion case, organic smooth shape

off-center brand placement

unique depth+decomp bezel



using that you will notice the Aquaman is somewhat out of norm



but end of the day still personal preferences lah hehehe :lol:
