[Advice pls]- How to use paypal huh?

i'm about to place an order for a watch, then at the order processing stage, in the payment section, 3 type of method is suggested. They are:-

1. Wired transfer

2. PAYPAL-IPN

3. PAYPAL



i'm new to internet purchase... wonder any bros here can guide me thru?



Previously when i made my internet purchase, that was my first DELL LAPTOP, all i need to provide was the mailing address as well as the debit card details.



At BODYING.SG, the payment method seems to be much simpler...

U need to open a paypal account.

Then link a credit card to the account.

Can start using already if i recall correctly. (ie no need verification)

But Paypal will take some time to verify ur address and credit card (they will give u some instructions to do this when u sign up).



Remember when receiving money either as a gift or as a merchant, Paypal will take a cut.

If u are giving money as a gift to the other person, either one of u has to bear the charges.

When buying items using paypal, no charges for the buyer but if u are buying from a fellow forumer, u will have to discuss how to split up the charges.



Also, u can transfer funds from a DBS / POSB acct to the paypal account (this is FOC) but to transfer back to ur POSB/ DBS acct, paypal will take a big cut.



All in all, paypal is a convenient method of paying and is quite secure for the buyer due to the dispute centre. Also they will not reveal ur credit card details to anyone, even the buyer.

So i have to buka a paypal acct?

Since the last news regarding PAYPLA kanna hacked, i'm sort of no confidence with leaving my card details permanently there.

Does PAYPAL acts like a basket where i transfer the amount of my purchase in exact amount, then wait for receiving party to acknowledge and proceed with the order?

think dbs/posb angkat bolah with Paypal, they can top up $ into PP before use like EZ-Link hence no need to link card





or u can simply purchase exact Paypal credits from people to put into your account before doing purchases, similar to above no need to link card.



these guys are probably small scale vendors, like said they convert straight will tio big cut by Paypal... so some rather just sell credits for cash, typically offering a slightly better exchange rate than what Paypal offer you for conversion





verification is SGD$3 they deduct from your linked card, then will refund you by 'returning' the $3 into your Paypal account

anyway every transaction made with paypal will have a notification forwarded to the email linked to it



i haven't really bothered to go look into whether the auto notification can be disabled ala what a hacker would do if he don't want you to find out till you see your monthly statement.

Since u don't have confident using credit card, debit credit is another alternative & much more safer!! U deposit the amount ur total purchase that all!!

Yup... Can just topup PP acct via DBS... Note to just topup the exact amt u need for ur purchase to minimize balance in ur PP acct..

...Paid using PayPal IPN. There is an option for you to select if you wish to be billed in your currency or the seller's currency.

From another thread... i didn't know that i can pay by using the shipper's currency that could be the same as real time rate show in forex sites.

For example, today... infact during this weekend, the x-change rate of 1EURO is to 1.7004SGD, if i opt for PAYPAL IPN, i'll be charged 1.7004/euro as well?



Can anyone share more info on this? When the value in other currency went through, transferred to shipper, won't the interbank x-change rate kicks in?

Thanks for the link hwt. I'm not sure that difference in forex fees exists. All banks now trying to be very opaqueand hide that info, trying to make as much money where possible...

Dudes... recently i had received an email from PAYPAL, which says about paying $3 to get my spending limited release as it's coming to the end of initial limit?

What does that mean? Is that $3 some kind of membership fee to paypal?



And what's the 7K spending limit that's subjected to be monitored by the MAS thingy?

Once ur spending reaches that amt, paypal will email u to ask for proof of ur address. If i rem correctly, its either ur passport / I/C or a recent utilities bill.

U just have to scan the documents and email them back.



At least thats what happens to me. :D No issues, I been using paypal for many yrs w/o any problems. Just be careful of scam emails asking for passwords etc (ie, never click on links from emails or give passwords via email even though they *seem* to be from paypal, (the scammers nowadays are getting smarter, the email and website they use look very similar to the paypal one). )



The other issue; I never heard of paying any membership fees for paypal. Did u claim back the $3 they charge when u opened the acct (to verify ur credit card)?

the letter 's' is extremely important.



If no 's', means its not sent by Paypal liao



most sensitive website, ibanking etc, will have this 's'.

What i did noticed, is whenever i do transaction using explorer, the whole address bar is in light green, when using safari there's a lock in the address bar... no sight of the green s thingy from both user wor... that mean's i'm in the correct secure site?

Yes bro it is free to open acct.

But in order to verify ur credit card, they will charge the $3 to ur card. And then they will REFUND u once u key in a 4 digit code (which will appear on ur credit card monthly bill as paypal**** (cannot rem the exact name though)). Once u key in this, the CC is verified and hence, u can spend more $ (ie ur credit limit is increased).

If u never key in this code, ur CC will not be verified and hence, ur spending limit will be err... limited :lol: (USD500 if i am not wrong)



The 7K is not to charge GST which is payable usually to the postman, paypal do not care abt GST one. Apparently MAS wants to monitor transaction of SGD in and out of Spore so they make this measure. The 7K is the accumulated amt of $ u spend via Paypal (over the months). If u reach this ceiling, then Paypal will email u to verify ur address (it took me 4 yrs to reach this leh =p )

I have a paypal acct. which I signed up when I was in HK many years back, thus my paypal address is still that HK address. I tried to update it to my Sg address but somehow was not allowed.



I'm thinking of signing up with paypal again but with my sg address, will they allow me to do that ? Should i signup a personal acct or premier acct. (I'm always a buyer never a seller). My old acct was so long ago, I cant remember what it was,but i think it was a personal acct.

Just sign up a new account with a different email address and a different credit card number, it should be fine.



And personal should be fine.
