Abit technical qn: how is a crystal secured to watchcase?
Am curious about the typical, non-monocoque case. Does the crystal pop inwards (towards caseback), or outwards (away from caseback)?? Or is the design model/make dependent?



Am thinking of disassembling a cheap auto to play play, but scared cannot fix back..

From what I know, they are pressed into a case, using a crystal press.

To remove it, you will need to push it out from inside the case. So you need to remove the movement (unless u hv a crystal lifter)

That's most of the watches out there...



There are also other ways to secure the crystal. Here's what I have for a Jenny Caribbean where the movt can only be accessed from the front and they are secured down with a screw down.

some crystal just press in , some have a metal ring around it to secure , some have rubber gasket for the crystal too, some held by bezel , some have a pop up crystal design , have to be inserted from the inside (especially so for odd shape crystals)

before you do anything , remove the movement first :twisted:

i was cleaning my watch, clearing it of junk under the bezel with a toothpick and cotton bud.





i noticed a thin layer of dried translucent silicon (at least i think thats what it is) along the edge where the crystal and case meets. its just a short one, maybe covering 15 degrees of the circular circumference.

so i kay kiang, used the toothpick to touch it... and it moved!!! seeing that it does no purpose, i wiped it off with the cotton bud...



now thinking back, abit scared that i took out the sealant... haha... though i think the real sealant cannot be removed that easily...
