Seiko 6309 Tuna mod - Discussion thread

Seiko 6309 Tuna mod - Discussion thread
There has been some interest when I posted pics of the mod (6309-7040 dial, 3rd party insert)

Or 6309-7290 style dial w/ original insert (watch on the left)

Thus I have decided to do a short writeout (I believe CEO also has the same mod).

Great write up.

I duplicated the topic in Articles / Reviews too for archive, so this thread can continue as a discussion thread for the Tuna mod.

Now, time to hunt for a 7549-7010 case

U like tuna one meh? Lol.

To stay on topic, i bought my 7549 to mod after seeing ceo's tuna mod. Some call it 吊 engine. Lol.

Turn out the 7549 is too beautiful for me to mod it.
Re: Seiko 6309 Tuna mod - Discussion thread
I think the smaller tuna cans are quite ok le.. very attractive...

They sit on the wrist nicely.

But I'm not so keen on those 6159 size of tunas, sits way too high. If I recall, it's even bigger than my biggest Aqua Dive Caribbean...
Re: Seiko 6309 Tuna mod - Discussion thread
does a 6306 movt fits in a 7549?

if it fits, it will be the perfect mod

i believe it does fit if not wrong
Re: Seiko 6309 Tuna mod - Discussion thread
Great write up and info. Thanks!

I've tried to look for a dead 7549-7010, but could never find one.

This is one mod I would love to do up myself.

But like sellwatch bro, I could never mod a working piece. It's too nice to ruin it.

This mod uses the 6309-7040 (or 7290) movement in a tuna 7549-7010 case.

Why do such a mod? Well, I had a 7549-7010 with a dead movement (probably due to bad coil) and always wanted to have a day-date auto tuna . Personal preferences on the dial, I have kept the 6309 dial to maintain the movement roots, but u can always use back the 7549 dial or the sbbn007 dial .

The 6309 movement is a direct drop in replacement, fits like a glove, but u must use back the 7549-7010 stem as the 6309 stem is too short (7549 case is thicker).

The 7549-7010 has several compatible parts (with the 6309-7040/7290) , which are : bezel insert, caseback, crown (except the stem), gaskets related to the above are also compatible (bezel gasket, crown gasket, caseback gasket). Crystal and crystal gasket are NOT compatible.

Thongsia carries the 7549-7010 gaskets, crystal and shrould screws (all items subject to available stock), but u should provide them with the part number when purchasing.

325W26HB0A HARDEX CRYSTAL

0C3060B0A CASE BACK GASKET

0K0240B0A CROWN & STEM GASKET

EZ3210B04 GLASS GASKET

0C3660B02 ROTATING BEZEL GASKET

81500887 SHROUD SCREW

Pls update here if u plan to do this mod and have questions.

Cheers and good luck ,

Bro, ur 7549 dial wana flip? I got spare case for 6309. Lol.

Don't plan to flip my 7549 parts yet... just in case I change my mind in the future and swap back the 7549 dial on the 6309 movt.

6306 diver should fit, since the 6309 diver was derived from it and they match 99% . Or u could get the 3rd party hack kit for 6309 and see if Ah Goh can install it ...

hmmm, ok, can consider switching to 6306 movt
Re: Seiko 6309 Tuna mod - Discussion thread
This is pretty darned cool! :D

One question though, you say it's a perfect fit. Is that with regard to the depth of the movement in addition to the diameter? Was no spacer required to better hold the movement in position, especially considering the rotor? Or did the case already have ample space inside for the auto movement?

and another, is it 300m rated still?

1. both the diameter and height is correct ,no issues with "too much space" or "too little space" , rotor spins freely ...

I'll probably open the case and take a pic of the innards one of these days. In fact I am currently using the 6309-7290 caseback

2. Didn't get it "officially" WR tested , but I have done some water experiments (so far so good). If it really floods, no big deal since 6309 movt is easily replaced or serviced ....

Re: Seiko 6309 Tuna mod - Discussion thread
Bumping this, since now i'm the owner of an auto tuna mod.. lol.

Should I change the dial... or just drop in a full 6309 movt+dial+hands hmmmm

;) ;)
Re: Seiko 6309 Tuna mod - Discussion thread
There is a certain character to the aged dial that draw my attention. I would suggest changing the strap instead. Have a feel then if really not your style then make the change on the dial bro!

My 2cents.
Re: Seiko 6309 Tuna mod - Discussion thread
I like the aged dial but the hands and dial have different age, so it reflects in the lume color too.

Hi bros,

May i know can a 7549-7009 casing be used instead of 7549-7010 ?

Are they the same for modding ?

TIA.
